Senior Scientist II - Assay Development - Discovery Psychiatry

Job Description The Pharmacology and Cell Biology Group within Discovery Psychiatry is seeking an experienced and self‑motivated scientist to lead and conduct independent research investigating psychiatric conditions in vitro using novel cell‑based strategies in support of target validation and pipeline programs. The role is hands‑on, lab‑based, and offers an opportunity to make an impact in neuropsychiatry at AbbVie. Responsibilities Act as a subject matter expert in cell‑based models of complex neurological disease; introduce new concepts and technologies to advance research capabilities. Independently design and optimize assays to characterize disease‑relevant cell‑based models of psychiatric disease. Perform genetic and pharmacological modulation of targets in clonal cell lines and iPSC models to better understand target biology. Collaborate with external partners from academia, consortia and CROs. Contribute to group and project team strategy by proposing and refining experimental approaches. Present findings to internal teams and external partners; publish research in peer‑reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. Provide scientific guidance and training to junior scientists and research associates. Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding conduct, safety, handling of materials, and controlled compounds. Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s Degree with 12+ years of experience, Master’s Degree with 10+ years, or PhD with 4+ years of experience (preferred). Previous experience in the biotech/pharma industry, preferably supporting therapeutic programs. Extensive experience in developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing cell‑based assays, exploring multiple approaches for complex challenges. Experience with iPSC neuron model systems. Proficiency across molecular biology, biochemistry, high‑content imaging, high‑throughput electrophysiology, and genetic or pharmacological target modulation. Ability to independently plan experiments, troubleshoot, interpret data, and resolve key project hurdles. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach. Desired: Project leadership experience within pharma/biotech, preferably psychiatry research. Experience in bioenergetics and metabolism. Psychiatry therapeutic area experience. Curious, creative, risk‑taking, and proactive problem‑solving.
