NIWC - Graduate Student - ISR Department Lead Systems Engineer Projects (Task 56-162525) Req No: 2026-20015 Category: Other Type: Student Salary: $22.84 - $28.04 per hour Close Date: Overview Hourly rates: $22.84 for Graduate Level 1 and $28.04 for Graduate Level 2. The rates are non‑negotiable. Graduate Level 1 (or above) candidates must be pursuing a Master’s or PhD in any major; STEM and Engineering/Science courses are a plus. Candidates should have coursework in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of Work. This role provides technical and analytical support in ISR systems integration, including autonomous vehicle and ISR equipment research and development. The student will assist in engineering analyses and assessments at the staff level and work with Lead Systems Engineers from other NIWC Pacific departments. Work will be conducted at NIWC Pacific in San Diego, CA. Projects involve autonomous vehicles, port security, and airborne platforms, on technologies from seabed to space. The student may support R&D and technology evaluation efforts across department projects and participate in center‑level activities to improve engineering procedures, including Model‑Based Systems Engineering. Responsibilities The student contractor shall provide support in the following areas as specified under individual task orders to the work sponsor: Conduct standardized and experimental engineering support with subsurface and surface autonomous vehicles in a controlled lab and, when required, in a controlled saltwater environment in the bay. Perform data analysis using Microsoft Excel and appropriate statistical software. Compose and complete technical reports, system analyses, and assessments. Assist with development of processes and procedures utilized by ISR systems in the collection and dissemination of data. Participate in Lead Systems Engineer meetings to coordinate engineering events and presentations for the ISR Department and NIWC Pacific. Conduct literature searches related to acceptance and execution of Model‑Based Systems Engineering practices. Submit monthly status reports in accordance with the base contract. Qualifications Graduate Level 1: Under general direction, candidates should be enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the required discipline and have a bachelor’s degree in the required discipline. Must be able to accomplish a minimum of 50% of the task without supervision. Graduate Level 2: Candidates may be PhD candidates or Master’s degree students and able to perform at a high level. Must have a bachelor’s degree in the required discipline and be able to accomplish a minimum of 90% of the task without supervision. Minimum Qualifications Area of Study: Any major. STEM and Engineering/Science courses are a plus. (First Year, Second Year or Doctoral Candidate). Preferred coursework: college‑level math; computer science or engineering; chemistry/biology. Desired Qualifications Expertise with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and common statistical software. Interest and/or experience in engineering practices and software/hardware development. Strong work ethic, detail‑oriented, and good communication skills. Availability: 10–20 hours per week during semester and 15–40 hours per week during breaks. Additional Applicant Information May require obtaining and maintaining a DoD SECRET security clearance. Only U.S. citizens may qualify. Student position limited to working 20 hours per week. On‑site work required at NIWC Pacific and participation in Microsoft Teams meetings as needed. Position will remain open until filled. Candidate must reside in California and live within commutable distance from San Diego State University at time of hire.
