Summary This Social Worker – Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) position is located in Shelbyville, IN. The incumbent will be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) and must meet all VHA eligibility requirements for participation. Duties Screen and assess veterans’ psychosocial needs with the interdisciplinary medical team, coordinating information gathering and setting realistic treatment goals. Develop treatment plans and set goals in collaboration with veterans, families, and team members, documenting plans using the MHS software. Provide evidence‑based psychotherapy individually and in groups, including telemental health services for veterans located outside the medical center. Arrange referrals to VA and community resources, and re‑assess veteran needs during the eligibility process. Monitor resource availability, identify unmet needs, and communicate findings with stakeholders to develop new resources. Advocate for veterans to access needed care and resources, empower veterans and families to manage complex enrollment and decision processes. Assess and intervene in crises, developing management and safety plans. Educate veterans and families about VA and community resources, entitlement programs, and assist in preparing advanced directives or living wills. Document all veteran and family contacts in the electronic medical record in a confidential, timely, and professional manner. Work Schedule Full Time Official hours: 07:30‑16:00 or 08:00‑16:30 Telework Participation is possible in accordance with VA policy and supervisor discretion. Requirements U.S. citizenship required. Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Background/security investigation. Completion of an online onboarding process and provision of valid identification. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program. Qualifications Basic Qualifications U.S. citizenship (non-citizens may apply only when citizens cannot be recruited). Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited school. Licensed or certified social worker at the master’s level; exemption available for GS‑9 level pending license completion within three years. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Counseling skills for working with veterans and families. Assessment of psychosocial functioning and formulation of treatment plans. Implementation of treatment modalities for individuals, families, and groups. Establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships with clients and community agencies. Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses and treatment procedures. Ability to coordinate community referrals and manage crises. Experience and Licensure Requirements (GS‑11) Minimum of one year of post‑MSW professional experience in health care or related settings and licensure at the independent practice level, or a doctoral degree in social work to satisfy the experience requirement. Expertise in community resource coordination and independent psychosocial assessment. Advanced treatment skills for diverse populations and use of multiple treatment modalities. Consultation experience with other social workers and staff. Preferred Experience Experience conducting individual psychotherapy with adults. Physical Requirements Community‑based work with moderate physical activity; must operate a vehicle, walk up to a mile, climb 2–3 flights of stairs, lift small objects, and use a computer for electronic charting. Education Degrees must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited institutions. Foreign education must be verified with a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
