Requires Secondary School Counselor Certificate from PA Dept. of Ed. and all other qualifications listed on our website. OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB: To use leadership and teaching skills to promote the educational development of each student.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
- Provides an effective program of instruction based on the needs and capabilities of students.
- Encourages students to set and maintain acceptable standards of classroom behavior.
- Develops and maintains a classroom environment appropriate for the learners, within the limits of available resources and consistent with the findings of effective schools research.
- Collaborates with the supervisor toward the setting of goals as appropriate for the improvement of instruction.
- Prepares written lesson plans consistent with district policy.
- Cooperates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
- Correlats individual instructional objectives with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the district's planned courses.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when necessary and under reasonable terms.
- Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with and behavioral progress of all students.
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:
- Maintains records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Attends and participates in faculty, department, and district meetings as per negotiated contract.
- Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others.
- Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with district policies and practices as per negotiated contract.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives instruction and supervision from the Building Principal in regard to work duties.
SUPERVISION GIVEN: None
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works indoors in adequate workspace, lighting, ventilation, and temperatures.
- Works with average indoor exposure to noise and stress.
- Works indoors with normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
- Periodically exposed to irate faculty members and/or parents.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Must possess hearing, seeing, speaking, smelling, and reasoning senses necessary to carry out job duties.
- Must possess ability to record, convey, and present information; explain policies and procedures; and follow instructions.
- Must possess ability to sit, stand, and walk periodically throughout the workday with occasional carrying, reaching, and grasping as necessary to carry out job duties.
- Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of hands/fingers to operate a computer and calculator to simple movements of feet/legs and torso necessary to carry out job duties.
- Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate on work.
- Sedentary work with occasional lifting and carrying of objects with weights of approximately ten pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A. EDUCATION/TRAINING: Pennsylvania Secondary Certificate in Guidance
- B. WORK EXPERIENCE: One year of experience working in the relevant department or an equivalent combination of acceptable education and/or experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential function of job.
- Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with clients, co-workers, and others.
- Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to student information and records.
- Must possess the technical knowledge of operating personal computers and other office equipment with accuracy and reasonable speed.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
- Must possess ability to conduct individual and group counseling
- Must possess ability to organize and test large group testing.
- Must possess knowledge and ability to use conflict mediation skills.
- Must possess knowledge and awareness of resources available to conduct career conferences.
- Must possess knowledge and ability to use technology
- Must possess ability to conduct parent/teacher and parent/teacher/student conference.
- Must possess ability to interpret standardized test scores, interest inventory scores, and help students apply information to career planning.
