Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Surgeon

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Children's) and Emory University School of Medicine (Emory) are seeking a fellowship trained pediatric abdominal transplant surgeon with strong clinical and academic foundation to join the Division of Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Surgery. Children's has one of the largest and most diverse abdominal pediatric transplant programs in the country, focusing on kidney, liver and dual organ transplantation.

Experience

• Experience with direct involvement in liver and kidney transplant patient care within the last two (2) years including: management of patients with end stage liver or renal disease, the selection of appropriate recipients for transplant, donor selection, histocompatibility and tissue typing, performing the transplant operation, immediate postoperative and continuing inpatient care, the use of immunosuppressive therapy including side effects of the drugs and complications of immunosuppression, differential diagnosis of liver or kidney dysfunction in the allograft recipient, histologic interpretation of allograft biopsies, interpretation of ancillary tests for liver and kidney dysfunction, and long term outpatient care.
• Experience in deceased and living donor liver transplantation, deceased and living donor kidney transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and dual organ transplantation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Eligible for OPTN as a pediatric abdominal transplant surgeon

Education

• Graduate of an accredited, four-year medical school
• Graduate of an accredited, post-graduate residency program
• Completion of an accredited ASTS fellowship program in Abdominal Organ Transplantation

Certification Summary

• Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Georgia
• Board certified in Pediatric Surgery and/or General Surgery
• Controlled Substance Registration Drug Enforcement Administration Certificate
• BLS or PALS certification

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and families and as a team member.
• Meets eligibility requirements for credentialing as part of the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Professional Staff.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical

• Serves as a liver and kidney transplant surgeon for the Division of Transplant Surgery within the Department of Surgery with an active inpatient and outpatient practice, with associated call coverage.
• Partners with Division Chief to ensure that the ongoing clinical operations of the liver and kidney transplant program abide by the UNOS bylaws and CMS regulations.
• Ensures that the Department is responsive to the needs of those it serves clinically (patients, families, referring physicians, other Departments, etc.).
• On daily Liver & Kidney Transplant Multidisciplinary rounds, improve surgical participation in expected discharge date planning (EDD).
• Develops strong, supportive, and collaborative relationships with referring physicians.

Administrative

• Participates in committees, patient selection conference, peer review, M&M case conferences.
• Manages patient workups and procedures according to department guidelines.
• Adopts any tools and/or technologies deemed part of the practice of abdominal transplant.
• Collaborates with the Surgical and Medical leadership to further development of the liver and kidney transplant programs.

Quality & Research

• Participates in quality improvement, safety, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
• Understands and works in compliance with UNOS/OPTN transplant regulations.
• Participates in clinical research within the Division as well as efforts to secure extramural funding.
• Ensures responsible and compliant conduct of research.
• Supports and promotes a research environment that involves attendings and trainees (including students, residents, fellows, advanced practice professionals).
• Participates in national transplant meetings.

Teaching/Education

• Participates in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents and fellows and other rotators through the transplant surgery service.
• Participates in developing an effective rounding program incorporating bedside RNs when seeing patients.
