Overview

The Work

The Network Specialist - Journeyman is responsible for providing intermediate-level expertise in the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of large-scale network systems. With a focus on system-level architecture, the candidate will analyze network traffic, troubleshoot complex issues, and manage the entire lifecycle of network communications systems. The role also involves planning large-scale systems projects, performing vendor comparisons, evaluating cost-efficiency, and ensuring system integration and quality assurance across technical solutions. This position contributes to the continuous improvement of network performance to support critical mission need

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance and monitoring of information systems operations to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
• Design, build, integrate, and implement advanced network systems, including LAN, MAN, and WAN infrastructure.
• Direct and manage the compilation of records and reports related to network operations and maintenance tasks.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex network performance issues, executing root cause analysis and recommending sustainable solutions.
• Analyze network traffic patterns and develop capacity planning strategies that ensure optimal performance and scalability.
• Monitor and respond to sophisticated hardware and software issues within technical control facilities, ensuring system stability.
• Collaborate with vendor support teams to escalate and resolve network outages or degraded system performance rapidly.
• Manage end-to-end life cycles for the procurement, setup, testing, installation, and support of networking communications systems.
• Perform system-level design and configuration activities, including determination of hardware specifications, operating systems, and platform configurations.
• Plan, execute, and oversee large-scale network systems projects, conducting vendor comparisons, cost analyses, and performance evaluations.
• Lead systems engineering tasks, including design, integration, personnel coordination, and project implementation for major systems.
• Conduct quality assurance reviews and evaluations of new and existing software products, ensuring compliance with standards and optimal performance.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications – Here’s What You Need

• Minimum of 3 years in network-related roles that include systems design, integration, and troubleshooting.
• Certifications (Required):
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • CompTIA Network+
  • Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)
• In-depth knowledge of network protocols, technologies, and systems, such as routing, switching, wireless, and advanced network architectures.
• Proficient in network traffic analysis, capacity planning methodologies, and troubleshooting tools.
• Expertise in system-level design and configuration, with experience selecting hardware and software platforms based on organizational needs.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and manage large-scale systems projects with vendor comparisons, cost studies, and performance metrics.
• Strong knowledge of systems engineering practices, including design, integration, implementation, and personnel/resource coordination within network environments.
• Skilled in conducting quality assurance reviews and evaluating the performance of new and existing software products.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills, capable of working across multi-functional teams and vendors.
• Ability to work independently on complex network challenges and contribute to team-wide collaboration efforts for technical solutions.
• A Top-Secret Security Clearance is required.

• Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

• Proficient in MS Office, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• High-pressure decision-making during network outages and during critical project deadlines may require strong problem-solving capabilities and stress management skills.

Reports to: Program Manager

 

Working Conditions 

• Professional office environment, with the ability to work onsite in the main office.
• May require lifting and carrying computer or networking equipment (e.g., servers and routers) weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Frequent use of tools, cables, and other equipment to perform installations and repairs.
• Ability to move around technical spaces, such as server rooms or data centers, which may involve bending, kneeling, or climbing ladders.
• Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
• Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
• May require working in high-security areas under strict access controls due to sensitive information or classified materials.
• Compliance with security clearances and monitoring systems is mandatory.
• Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
• Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
• May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
• May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
• May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
