DESCRIPTION

Sociology studies societies and human groups: their composition, organization, culture, and development. It combines scientific and humanistic methods to investigate a subject that is both relevant and broad-ranging from social interaction in everyday life to social changes taking place on a global scale. UCSD's Department of Sociology offers an innovative undergraduate program that covers the breadth of the discipline while giving students opportunities to specialize in areas of their choice, to conduct independent research, and to participate in an Honors Program. The department also encourages majors to study abroad and to take courses in other humanities and social science departments in order to expand their perspective on sociological topics.

UCSD's program in Latin American Studies has attained national and international distinction for its excellence in teaching, research, and public service. Each year its faculty offers approximately 100 Latin America-related courses in twelve academic departments, and the Latin American Studies program now offers three interdisciplinary degrees (Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies, Minor in Latin American Studies and Master of arts in Latin American Studies) supervised by an interdisciplinary faculty group under the chairmanship of the Director of Latin American Studies.

Under general supervision of the MSO, the financial analyst has independent administrative responsibilities for all fiscal activities within the Department of Sociology and the African and African-American Studies Research Center (AAASRC) - a center currently under the direction of a Sociology faculty member. Manage all extramural and state funds (in excess of $4 million) ensuring compliance with University and governmental rules, regulations and policies. Following consultation with the Chair and MSO oversee the preparation of the department operating budget and allocate resources accordingly. Participate in short- and long-range financial planning. Responsible for contract and grant administration (pre- and post-award). Perform budgetary/financial analytic studies and prepare financial reports. Analyze, interpret and implement departmental and university fiscal policies. Advise, assist and guide faculty, department staff, and graduate students on financial issues. Act as liaison with campus central offices. Serve as Departmental Security Administrator (DSA). Coordinate department computer replacement schedule. Provide counsel to graduate students seeking research and dissertation support from external sources. Manage student awards in accordance with agency regulations.
