The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus‑based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Essential Job Functions The Respiratory Care Practitioner II, Respiratory Therapist performs highly complex (senior level) respiratory therapy work tailored to the complex medical needs of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) residing at the State Supported Living Center. Responsibilities include overseeing and coordinating scheduling of respiratory care activities, treatments and equipment with internal and external providers; conducting assessments, diagnostics and specimen collection as ordered by the physician and within the scope of licensure; consulting with physicians, monitoring response to therapy, and providing documentation. The role includes providing clinical leadership for respiratory therapy services, serving as the primary subject‑matter expert, mentoring staff, managing equipment, developing policies and procedures, and participating in emergency resuscitation efforts. The position may require overtime, extended hours, weekends and holidays, and may involve occasional field visits or disaster response duties. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to State Supported Living Center and Intermediate Care Facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ICF‑IID) Knowledge of respiratory therapy principles and techniques Knowledge of respiratory equipment maintenance, cleaning and physiotherapy techniques Skill in operating, maintaining, and repairing respiratory therapy equipment Skill in using electronic health records and associated software Advanced skills in ventilator management, patient assessment, and respiratory adjuncts selection Skill in advanced assessment and diagnostics Skill in developing and implementing policies and procedures Skill in analyzing data, time management and prioritization Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to present ideas clearly and concisely Ability to recognize decline in patient status before overall decline Ability to provide respiratory therapy care to individuals with complex medical conditions and cognitive/behavioral health issues Ability to provide technical assistance to clinical and non‑clinical staff and individuals of varying abilities Ability to write accurate and concise clinical documents and prepare reports Ability to provide clinical leadership, mentoring and technical guidance Ability to collaborate with the interdisciplinary team Ability to participate in emergency resuscitation efforts and emergency response activities Ability to manage time effectively and maintain required continuing education hours Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Must be certified as a respiratory care practitioner by the State of Texas Medical Board. Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care is preferred. Initial Screening Criteria Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Respiratory Therapy is required; Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care (BSRC) is preferred. Experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner is required; one (1) year is preferred. Experience treating people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) is preferred. Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service. All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing. Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime, extended hours, weekends and holidays are possible.
