Assistant Produce Manager

Assistant Produce Manager Responsibilities Promote excellent customer relations by instilling positive, customer‑focused behavior with associates. Smile and greet customers, answer questions, and help resolve issues promptly and politely. Focus on continuous improvement in all areas of the department and make changes to ensure progress. Take customer orders over the phone or in person with a pleasant and positive attitude. Determine what the customer is looking for in terms of size and appearance. Create the finished product in a timely fashion. Ensure fresh, quality merchandise by using proper product handling techniques. Help control damages and minimize product losses according to company procedures and standards. Assist the Produce Manager with day‑to‑day functions of the produce operations such as merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement and customer service. Perform the duties of the Produce Manager in their absence. Develop and implement merchandising plans that meet financial goals. Be knowledgeable on weekly ads and specials to ensure correct pricing and production amounts. Continuously improve knowledge of the produced merchandise. Adhere to and enforce company policy regarding production logs. Oversee department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports, product orders and supplies to ensure successful period‑end physical inventory. Assist with scheduling all department associates, participate in training, reward and recognize performance, and delegate work assignments to effectively utilize talents while maximizing profits. Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) for current and new associates. Manage inventory levels and review orders to ensure product quantities meet customer demand. Maintain backroom organization and product storage within company guidelines. Oversee shelf replenishment efforts to ensure product availability, prioritizing weekly specials, seasonal items and other high‑velocity items. Utilize the cutting list for accuracy and product variety. Check and verify all department deliveries and invoices to ensure accurate billing. Assist with unloading merchandise and transporting it to the sales floor or storage area. Enforce and follow department practices regarding receiving, dating and restocking to ensure proper product rotation. Monitor product quality and freshness. Break down deliveries. Control department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, controlling labor costs and reducing losses due to damages, spoiled product and shrink. Ensure associates correctly follow company recipes for prepared products. Maintain freshness by properly removing and recording out‑of‑code products. Complete required product logs. Keep the produce department well stocked and appealing to meet customer demands. Handle special requests such as filling orders for fruit baskets and resolving customer concerns promptly. Unpack cartons and crates of merchandise, clean and trim produce, and stock area with new merchandise. Ensure merchandise is in saleable condition by rotating stock and maintaining freshness. Ensure that product has been properly priced with correct signage. Maintain salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable as needed. Assist in building attractive displays. Accurately complete necessary product logs. Handle spoiled, damaged, new and discontinued items in accordance with company policy. Maintain backroom and receiving area security and organization by promoting procedures. Perform general sanitation in the department, follow cleaning schedules and department guidelines. Dispose of trash properly. May assist with baling cardboard or other related duties if properly trained. Ensure smooth function of the department and store by cooperating with co‑workers and superiors. Continuously improve job performance. Use all company provided Personal Protected Equipment (PPE) including cut‑resistant gloves, safety cutters, company sponsored footwear, etc. May be called upon to assist in other departments. Supervisory Responsibilities Assist the department manager in supervising all associates within the department. May also oversee the Floral department in select stores. Specific number of associates depends on store volume. Qualifications High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in business related or food service‑related field desirable. Minimum two years' experience in management in a retail, restaurant or supermarket environment. Rate of Pay and Benefits Hourly pay for this position starts at $16.00 and is up to $25.00.
