Stationary Engineer

The Stationary Engineer will assist with the operations, maintenance, and repair of the equipment within the central plant facility, as well as the downstream steam and chilled water distribution. Equipment includes: Gas Fired Turbine, Steam boilers, HRSG, Gas Compressor, Absorption Chiller, Cooling Towers, Pumps, and motors. Responsibilities and Duties Operations : Assist with startup, shutdown, and emergency procedures for plant systems including Gas-fired turbine, Gas compressor, HRSG, gas-fired boilers, absorption chiller, centrifugal chillers, and cooling tower. Perform water tests as required for the supply and treatment of boiler feed water and condensate, and work with vendors to support care and treatment of cooling towers. Monitor control room instrumentation and alarms to identify deficiencies and take corrective actions. Utilize the building management systems (BMS) for effective performance and deficiency measures. Assist with building switchovers by draining AHU coil units or filling depending upon season. Maintenance : Perform preventive and corrective maintenance for plant equipment including boilers, chillers, HRSG, turbine, generators, cooling towers, and air compressors. Identify leaks, noise, and abnormal conditions, and make recommendations or repairs. Periodically blow down centrifugal chillers during operations, and maintain proper flow through barrels, which may include cleaning strainers. Maintain steam and chilled water manholes by checking ground water pumps and operations. Work with vendors for services including the gas compressor, turbine, and chillers. Use the work order system (Works) to track and schedule maintenance. Repair : Repair and/or replace condensate and sump pumps, perform alignments, assist with necessary repairs to various campus steam traps, perform proper Lock-out-Tag-out when working on equipment, and assist vendor with repairs as needed for plant equipment. Working Conditions The work area includes Central Plant and all campus facilities. Position may require working varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holiday coverage, covering open shifts as needed. Maintain a safe work environment through job planning, housekeeping, and identifying corrective hazards. Comply with department and college policies and procedures. Qualifications Education : Associates degree in plant utilities, electrical, or mechanical engineering. High School diploma. Relevant Military Training. Experience : Three to Five years’ experience as a boiler operator/nuclear, and/or stationary engineer. Experience in operating high‑pressure steam boilers and distribution. Experience with central plant chiller systems and distributed chilled water. Experience with the operations of switching 13.2KV and 480V breakers through a Load Management System (LMS). Skills : Good communication and interpersonal skills. Computer skills including Word, Excel, and Adobe. Knowledge of distributive control systems (DCS). Licenses : Valid New York State driver’s license. Licensed as a Stationary Engineer, and/or Navy plant operator. Compensation The hourly range for this position is $27–$29.90 per hour. The wage for the finalist selected for this role will be set based on factors including departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
