Highway Maintenance Worker

Job Overview Highway Maintenance Worker – Under supervision, performs a variety of routine repair and maintenance work related to highway projects on roadways, roadside appurtenances, storm drainage systems, and landscapes; or airfield repair and maintenance projects on runways, taxiways, aprons, parking lots, fences, gates and adjacent airport properties. Key Responsibilities Perform routine maintenance on roadways, road infrastructure, airfields and surrounding properties. Operate road, airfield, and landscape maintenance tools and equipment. Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Execute semi-skilled manual tasks related to repair and maintenance of roadways and airfields. Operate hand and power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Utilize required computer and software applications. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in vegetation and debris removal, pavement repair, roadside and/or airfield appurtenances, and landscape areas. Knowledge of temporary traffic control methods to ensure traffic flow and protect work crews. Knowledge of safety precautions and safety orders pertaining to the work performed. Knowledge of various computer software applications used in transportation maintenance. Knowledge of office equipment such as computers, copiers, faxes. Ability to read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance. Ability to understand and apply Federal and State laws and regulations. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with others. Minimum Qualifications Either: Successful completion of 30 semester (or equivalent) units from an accredited college, career school, or approved apprenticeship program in a construction trade or a closely related field. Or: One year of full‑time paid experience that is directly related to the knowledge and abilities listed above for the class, or performing general labor work in support of highway, airfield, agricultural and/or landscaping repair or maintenance, or other construction trade projects. Additional Requirements Valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, at the time of appointment; Class B must be obtained within 90 days. Some positions may require a Tank Vehicle Endorsement and/or a Passenger Endorsement within 90 days. Some positions require valid certifications such as a Qualified Applicator Certificate, forklift/tug certification, 40‑hour HAZWOPER, or Basic CPR/First Aid. Minimum age of 18 years at the time of appointment. Physical ability to perform manual labor such as digging, lifting, carrying up to 90 pounds, walking or standing for long periods, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and operating ladders. Ability to work outdoors in all climatic conditions, around dust, noise, chemicals, moving equipment, traffic, fumes, and non‑routine hours, including night shifts and holidays. Background and criminal history check will be conducted; a felony or misdemeanor that directly relates to job duties will disqualify a candidate unless mitigating circumstances exist.
