English Teacher

English Teacher (Grades 9-12) Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the teacher will develop students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing; foster communication skills; cultivate an appreciation of literature; motivate students to read a wide variety of publications; help students derive information, comprehend, and critically assess reading materials; and promote the development of skills in English reading, grammar, and syntax. Essential Functions Develop and administer an English education curriculum that aligns with school district goals. Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into engaging learning experiences. Teach English grammar, syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary, and word usage. Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions on various reading materials, including mass media and literature. Work with students and others to prepare materials for inclusion in literary publications, contests, etc. Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to suit individual student needs, including students with special needs. Maintain familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests, adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests. Continuously improve professional knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research. Maintain accurate records of grading and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourage parental involvement in student education and ensure effective communication with parents. Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior for a functional learning atmosphere. Coordinate with other professional staff and participate in faculty meetings and committees. Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment while maintaining inventory records. Additional Duties Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Equipment Use standard office equipment such as a personal computer, printer, copier, fax machine, and telephone. Travel Requirements Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles. Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, connotations, spelling, literature, and related content areas taught. Knowledge of data systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws. Ability to use computer networks and software applications. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self‑evaluation of performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others involved in the course of work. Physical and Mental Demands The teacher works in standard office and school building environments. Certification / License Qualifications Profile [State] State Certification as an English Education Teacher. Education Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment. Master’s degree in a related area preferred.
