Medical AssistantThis is a position for a Medical Assistant with the Department of Family Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. Under direct supervision this position will assist with clinical duties as described.ResponsibilitiesTriage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, following standing triage orders, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies, make sure immunizations are up to date and prepare patient for the visit.Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures and treatments. Provide basic patient care and education as directed by provider and standing orders.Completes delegated tasks from the current and prior day i.e.: patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agency requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-up. All tasks must be reviewed, addressed, and marked appropriately before the close of each business day.Coordinates services with specialists i.e.: radiation oncology, pulmonology, endocrinology, nutritional counseling, or social services consultation. Documents all correspondence and interventions in the electronic health record.Assists supervisors in the training of new staff members.Maintains current inventory of medical and office supplies Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains used instrumentation per department protocol.Medical Assistants are required to fill in for other clinical staff during vacations and illness and perform other duties as assigned by providers, or supervisors at both sites.The successful candidate in this role shall respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient inquiries should be answered on the same day they are received, before leaving for the day. If patient is not home at the first attempt, a notation should be made in the medical record. All patient conversations must be documented in the electronic medical record.Participate in all staff meetings, education lectures and quality improvement activities.Follow EVMS Medical Group protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality. Complete annual recertification for Blood Borne Pathogens, HIPAA Compliance Training, Respiratory FIT and IT Policy. Maintain current CPR certification and any updates relating to M.A. Certification.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications and SkillsCertification as a Medical Assistant such an RMA or CMA is required.Completion of BLS training and recertification every 2 yearsSuccessful completion of a Medical Assistant program.Preferred QualificationsThe candidate shall be detail oriented, self-motivated, and possess excellent time management and interpersonal skills.The candidate shall possess strong communication skills.The candidate will be able to overcome obstacles through problem solving.The candidate shall be able to show empathy and understanding for patients and colleagues.Previous medical office experience with relevant skills preferred. Customer service-oriented individual is required. Experience in a "fast paced" ambulatory setting is desirable but not required.Location : LocationUS-VA-Portsmouth
