DEPARTMENT ONLY: Adult Corrections Sergeant/Supervisor

GENERAL PURPOSE
The Corrections Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of assigned staff and for the completion of tasks specific to their assigned area of responsibility. Corrections Sergeants help to ensure a safe and secure environment for the individuals who work, visit, or reside within the facility and enforce Correctional facility rules and regulations. A Corrections Sergeant may be assigned to the following areas within the Correctional facility: Shift Sergeant, Administrative Sergeant, Support Services Sergeant, Special Management Sergeant, Training and Development Sergeant, and Court Services Sergeant. Each Sergeant role has different responsibilities as outlined in designated area task sheets. This position is obtained through promotion and works under the direction of a Corrections Lieutenant. Supervision exercised: Supervise Corrections Officer staff as assigned.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervise, assign and direct the work of employees on an assigned shift. Provide support within shift as required to include performing the duties assigned as Corrections Officer. Conduct employee briefings related to policy changes, special orders, training bulletins, special assignments, and other similar items. Ensure adequate shift coverage by preparing work schedule, scheduling daily post assignments, approving leave requests, justifying and controlling overtime and reviewing time and attendance records. Ensure appropriate response to emergency and routine inmate contacts. Evaluate employee performance by identifying deficiencies, providing guidance, training, mentoring, recommending corrective action when needed, and acknowledging employee accomplishments when appropriate. Enforce compliance with departmental standard operating policies and procedures, jails standards and collective bargaining agreement. Comply with and enforce compliance with departmental standard operating procedures, Civil Services policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, county policies, Nebraska Jail Standards, PREA and all applicable federal, state and local laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment. Maintain records, prepare and review reports, and compose correspondence relative to assigned area of responsibility. Identify staff development and training needs and ensure that training is obtained and completed. Plans and conducts in-service training for employees. Observe inmate activities to detect unusual or prohibited behavior, which might be a threat to the security of the facility or the safety of employees, inmates, or visitors. Direct and participate in periodic shakedown of facility, grounds, cells and living areas to detect contraband or defects in the security system. Observe and appropriately respond directly and through subordinates to "critical incidents" such as assaults, disturbances, or other situations threatening facility security. Take control of situation until relieved by a command officer. Make recommendations for special recognition of subordinate's outstanding performance or effort. Conduct inmate disciplinary hearings and attend classification meetings regarding problem inmates. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, co-workers, supervisors, Officials, County employees, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the general public. May be required to operate a motor vehicle for business to include inmate transport. Report to assigned worksite with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance. Serve as a member of various committees as assigned. Perform other duties as directed and assigned. Education and Experience Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field - preferred. Certification as a Correctional Officer. Three (3) years of work experience in corrections, detention facility, criminal justice or security required. One (1) year of work experience as a Corrections Officer with Sarpy County Department of Corrections required. Approved education or work experience beyond that required which provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered and substituted for the stated education. Special Requirements Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Driver's License, as well as meet eligibility requirements of "acceptable driver standards" as defined by the County. Must maintain required certifications (e.g. TAP, CPR, state certifications) throughout the course of employment. Incumbent will be required to submit to random drug testing. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of and ability to apply Sarpy County Department of Corrections standard operating procedures manual. Knowledge of and ability to apply Nebraska Jail Standards. Knowledge of and ability to apply modern correctional principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision. Working knowledge of safe handling and disposal techniques of potentially infectious materials (e.g., blood, body fluids, etc.). Skill in the use of computers and associated software (e.g., Microsoft Office, etc.) Ability to learn and use specialized software. Working knowledge and ability to apply self‑defense techniques and to control, subdue another individual with or without assistance. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written. Effective supervisory and coaching skills. Ability to communicate with the inmate population to accomplish de‑escalation of incidents. Ability to plan, supervise and evaluate the work of others. Good sense of observation and memory. Ability to prepare accurate records and reports. Ability to interpret and explain departmental policies, practices, and procedures. Ability to enforce rules, regulations, policies, practices, and procedures with firmness, tact, and impartiality and make appropriate use of disciplinary options. Excellent moral character and the ability to treat others equally and to not discriminate against inmates, co‑workers, or others based on race, national origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or social, economic and cultural backgrounds. Ability to demonstrate emotional maturity and stability. Ability to handle information of a confidential and sensitive nature and adhere to regulations restricting disclosure of confidential information. Ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions. Ability to act decisively and with good judgement in stressful or emergency situations while maintaining composure. Ability to analyze specific data elements and draw logical conclusions. Ability to prioritize work and carry out assigned projects to completion. Ability to perform tasks with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. Ability to prepare and present training materials in a clear and concise manner. Ability to operate standard office and detention equipment (i.e. radio, handcuffs, first aid).PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is generally performed indoors in a secured facility with an inmate population that includes working in enclosed spaces for extended periods of time and around high noise areas. Work may be difficult or emotionally challenging when dealing with irate or verbally abusive inmates, detainees, or visitors. Work is performed in a physically threatening environment that may involve crisis situations requiring major decisions involving people, resources, and property. Work may expose employees to infectious materials, body fluids, communicable disease and blood borne pathogens. Work includes rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and may require unforeseen overtime. An incumbent must possess the hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers, control panels, radios, handcuffs, leg irons, hook knife, chemical agent, locking/unlocking doors, alarms, and other equipment used to perform the essential functions of this job. Communication abilities include the ability speak at a level to convey information. Exchange ideas and have command presence. Visual acuity at a level to view computer terminal, analyze data, read extensively and at a level to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work assigned. Corrections Officers are required to perform brief periods of intense physical exertion when physical engagement with non‑compliant or disruptive inmates occur. This may involve subduing and restraining one or more inmates who may have weapons. While calling for backup is advised, there are instances where the Officer is required to take action before assistance arrives. Incidents requiring physical intervention may arise as frequently as several times a day.
