Job Title: CNC Machinist

Job Description

This role is responsible for setting up and operating CNC mills and related equipment in a dynamic job shop environment. You will perform complex setups, make program edits, and ensure parts meet precise specifications using a variety of measuring tools and inspection methods.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC mills in a job shop environment, handling a wide variety of parts and short-run jobs.
• Set up tooling, fixtures, and workholding, and adjust machine speeds, feeds, offsets, and changeovers to meet job requirements.
• Run first-piece parts and perform first-piece inspections to verify conformance to specifications before proceeding with production.
• Measure and inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and zolars to ensure dimensional accuracy and quality.
• Operate mills, lathes, and mill-turn machines ranging from 3-axis to 5-axis configurations.
• Read and interpret G and M codes and make appropriate program edits at the machine as needed.
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions, and check parts against blueprints throughout the machining process.
• Troubleshoot machining issues and make mechanical and program adjustments to improve part quality and process efficiency.
• Adapt to varying run times, from a few minutes to a few hours, and work on new parts and setups on a regular basis in a non-production, job shop setting.
• Participate in cross-training on a variety of CNC and manual machinery to support a flexible and versatile operation.

Essential Skills

• Experience setting up CNC machines, including tooling, fixturing, and work offsets.
• Proficiency in adjusting machine speeds, feeds, offsets, and performing changeovers on CNC equipment.
• Hands-on experience working on 3-axis CNC machines or greater.
• Ability to read, interpret, and work with G and M codes, including making basic program edits at the machine.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and use them to verify part dimensions and features.
• Proficiency using measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges for part inspection.
• Practical CNC machining and machine operating experience in a job shop or similar environment.
• High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating mills, lathes, and mill-turn machines, including 3-axis to 5-axis equipment.
• Familiarity with Mazak CNC equipment and controls.
• Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills for machining processes and equipment.
• Experience with CAD/CAM systems for CNC programming is a plus.
• Ability to work with drill presses and other supporting shop equipment.
• Comfort working with varying run times and frequent part and setup changes typical of a job shop.
• Programming experience or exposure to CNC programming concepts is beneficial.

Work Environment

This position operates on a 3rd shift schedule from 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. The facility is very clean, well lit, air conditioned, and temperature controlled, providing a comfortable and consistent work setting. The shop has undergone extensive renovations and upgrades, including substantial investment in new machinery and equipment, reflecting a modern, well-maintained manufacturing environment. The role is based in a job shop setting rather than a high-volume production line, so you will experience varied work, different parts, and changing setups on a regular basis.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Albany, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $33.00/hr.
