Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II (S)

The NC Zoo is looking for a motivated Vehicle Mechanic. The primary purpose of this position is to keep all zoo motorized vehicles and equipment in good, safe working order through safety inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair work for the safety of visitors and staff. To function at a journeyman or above level in accordance with established automotive and equipment repair and maintenance practices. To comply with all State and Federal regulations including disposal of hazardous materials. Vehicles and equipment cover a wide range including trams (diesel and propane); buses (gasoline, diesel, and electric); heavy trucks; light trucks, vans, and passenger vehicles; utility vehicles such as golf carts and gators (gasoline, diesel, and electric); agricultural and construction equipment such as tractors, mowers, backhoes, track excavators & skid steer, compact track, and rubber tire loaders; small engine equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, and chainsaws; as well as portable generators and welders. This list is not all-inclusive and would include generally any equipment powered by internal combustion engine or electric motor. This position is subject to working over or being called back into work at any time day or night. Required to work a weekend and holiday on-call rotation which may become an on-site rotation if the position becomes 7-day. This position must be available for on-call and emergency callback within 45 minutes. This position is Essential/Mandatory and required to report on adverse weather days and for Zoo emergencies including overnight stay if required. This position may be called to work special events or Spring Season weekends/holidays.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform repairs to a wide range of equipment and automotive components to include the engine or electric motor, drivetrain, tires/tracks, suspension, steering, cooling systems, various brake systems, electrical systems, computer system and diagnostics, hydraulics, and generally all components except major body repair. Properly dispose of and recycle fluids and materials.
• Perform service maintenance including changing or replacing oil and other fluids, lubrication, filters, belts, wipers, tires, lights, fuses, etc.
• Perform vehicle safety inspections. Perform emissions testing unless eliminated.
• Provide roadside assistance for disabled Zoo vehicles and equipment.
• Abid by all Federal, State, DNCR, and Zoo safety rules, regulations, and guidelines.
• Maintain the shop, outer workspace, service vehicles, tools, and equipment in a clean and orderly manner.

Position/Physical Requirements

• Typical work schedule is M-F, 7:00am to 4:00pm including 1 hour lunch.
• This position may be converted to a 7-day schedule to include weekends and holidays. This position is subject to working over or being called back into work at any time day or night. Required to work a weekend and holiday on-call rotation which may become an on-site rotation if the position becomes 7-day. Must be available for on-call and emergency callback within 45 minutes. This position is Essential/Mandatory and required to report on adverse weather days and for Zoo emergencies including overnight stay if required. This position may be called to work special events or Spring Season weekends/holidays.
• Position is required to participate in DNCR Drug and Alcohol pre-employment and random testing.
• Must have the ability to regularly and safely: Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; work in tight spaces; stand for the majority of the day; endure outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night with or without a reasonable accommodation.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical.
• Will be required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with equipment used in animal containment areas.
• Must have and be able to maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license. May be required to obtain a CDL.

Within 3 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:

• Successfully obtain and maintain an EPA Section 609 Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) Certification.

Within 6 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:

• Successfully obtain and maintain a North Carolina Vehicle Safety/OBD Inspection License.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

and

Two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment,

or

A sufficient year-for year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
