Registered Nurse Medical Surgical Inpatient Unit

Townsen Memorial Hospital is looking for a full-time registered nurse for the medical surgical inpatient unit to join our team in Houston, TX. The registered nurse will be responsible for admitting patients to the clinical area and providing nursing care to medical and post-operative patients. The staffing of the unit is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

Essential functions include ensuring a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients, assisting with the admission of patients to the unit, making initial assessments, monitoring patients' medical conditions, and reporting significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist. The nurse will also ensure surgical consent, pre-operative test results, and history and physical are in the medical record prior to the proposed procedure. Additionally, the nurse will make pre-op and post-op calls to patients, report important health history facts to the house supervisor and/or physician, provide emotional support to patients and family members, document patient care delivered accurately in the medical record, implement doctor's orders in a timely and accurate manner, educate patients and family, develop and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors, and other center employees, understand and maintain clinical competencies, demonstrate clinical problem solving and critical thinking, make decisions using an evidence-based analytical approach, plan for routine events and anticipate/prevent and manage/evaluate emergent situations, complete patient care responsibilities in a timely manner with accurate documentation, use downtime efficiently, adapt to unexpected changes, effectively acclimate to various work schedules to achieve high quality of care, protect patient and family privacy rights and maintain confidentiality of patient records in accordance with policy and procedure and HIPAA requirements, follow all safety rules on the job, report all accidents promptly and correct minor safety hazards, communicate with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace, maintain established center/departmental policies and procedures, adhere to the company standards of business conduct, perform other duties as assigned, work in collaboration with all clinical staff to ensure care needs are met and orders are carried out accurately, timely, and completely, and perform other related duties as assigned to support the hospital.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of computer and relevant software applications, strong attention to detail, self-control to maintain composure, ability to follow, plan and implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient condition, compliance with facility policies and procedures, compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs, practices nursing within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act of Texas, appropriate communication skills to practice collaborative nursing, ability to respond quickly, physically and mentally when priorities and/or the patient's condition changes, high stress tolerance, ability to adapt with flexibility, ability to work independently, ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow, ability to clean, maintain, and make minor adjustments to equipment, excellent patient interaction skills, exceptional customer service and phone etiquette, strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, Word & Vision (EMR), and energetic with a desire to learn and develop new skills.

Education and experience required include an associate's degree in nursing or related field, registered nurse in the state of Texas, current BLS, ACLS, and PALS, and one year of experience in a peri-operative and inpatient environment.
