Overview

The VHC Health Surgery Center is looking for a new team member to help their unit succeed! In the Surgery Center they see patients from as young as 1 month old, up to 100 years old. For Pediatric cases, you can expect to see basic pediatric cases such as Tonsilectomy, ear tubes, eye procedures.  The unit has 39 rooms in surgery Center for both pre and postop patients and 5 bays in holding.  They are all private rooms except the holding area, which has bays. Currently they are working on improving their First Case On Time scores and implemented OR/Preop Safety Checklist for patients going to surgery. Preop sees all surgical patients coming from home (CVOR to Cataract surgeries).  Preop Holding sees all the patients who come from the floors before surgery and patients receiving regional blocks. Phase II sees all patients who are going home after surgery including Joint replacements.  Occasionally they board patients while waiting for a room to be available. Preop nurses start IV’s, do assessments, give preop medications, and communicate with the surgeons and anesthesia with any preop issues. Phase II assesses patients, gives antibiotics and pain/nausea meds, do discharge teaching, and coordinate with PT/OT for joint cases.

 

Skills utilized in this unit include, assessment skills, IV skills, ACLS, MRSA and Covid swabbing, good communication skills, teaching skills for lots of education, flexibility in work area (rotate between preop and phase II). They work incredibly well as a team and have fun while on the job.  This team has a lot of experienced nurses and they help the new staff.  It is a friendly environment with self-scheduling and minimal weekends. You can expect to have potlucks and outside bonding events which helps promote a great work-life balance.  In the Surgery Center, you get a wide range of experiences and work with lots of different areas of the hospital.

Qualifications

Purpose & Scope:

Across all levels, the registered professional nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of their assigned patients. The RN is also responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel. The position requires knowledge of both department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of nursing care. Interpretive skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations, along with management and supervisory skills are inherent in the position. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is through the spoken word. Written, telephone, and manual dexterity skills are required for this position.

Education:

Associate's in Nursing Required

Bachelor's in Nursing Preferred

Experience:

One year of Nursing/Patient Care in an acute care setting is required

Certification/Licensure:

Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required or,

Compact State Licensure in Nursing required

BLS certification required

Registered Nurses on designated units are required to maintain certain certifications. New to practice area nurses or new graduates have 1 year to complete the specialty requirements below.

ACLS: ED, ICU, CVICU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiopulmonary Rehab, Bronch Suite, Interventional Radiology, Radiology Safety Nurses, Step down Units (3A, 3B, 4B), 6A, 6B, 7A,  Labor and Delivery, Hemodialysis, Respiratory Therapy, Float pool, GI Unit, and PACU

PALS: PACU: Pediatric Nurses, ED

NRP: NICU, Mother Baby, Labor and Delivery

De-escalation training: BHU, ED

 

Per policy ACLS or PALS cards stand as showing competence in BLS Skills per American Heart Association Guidelines. If an employee holds current ACLS or PALS certification, this meets the requirement for BLS in their job description. They do not need to also carry a separate BLS certification.
