DIR - RISK / QUALITY

Universal Hospital Services Inc.

Responsibilities Austin Oaks Hospital offers a continuum of psychiatric services for adolescents and adults. Located in South Austin, Texas on a beautiful thirteen-acre oak lined campus, we strive to provide a home‑like environment that promotes crisis resolution, positive self‑awareness, social skills, and personal growth. Austin Oaks Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services to stabilize symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health disorders. The Director of Risk Management and Performance Improvement (DRM/PI) has broad responsibility to ensure the hospital’s compliance at all times with Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulatory agencies standards and requirements. The DRM/PI is responsible for staff training and education on performance initiatives, outcomes measurement and reporting, protecting assets, coordinating loss control efforts, and advising management on potential losses. The Risk Management Program complies with TJC, other regulatory agencies, and UHS T.E.R.M. Program. The Director also ensures compliance with the UHS Code of Conduct and Compliance Program policies. Job Duties and Responsibilities Risk Identification and Evaluation Ensures appropriate and timely reporting of occurrences by maintaining a Healthcare Peer Review Reporting system (Occurrence notification system); enters incidents into the MIDAS database. Analyzes and trends data. Identifies actual and potential risk situations and facilitates determination of causative factors. Risk Reduction Networks with department directors to implement system changes aimed at optimally reducing or eliminating causative factors. Interfaces with the Patient Advocate to assess patient complaints and recommend action that may reduce litigation risk. Refers policies presenting particular risk in relation to previously identified problems to Corporate Risk Management. Performance Improvement Ensures the hospital meets Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulatory requirements. Consults with senior staff and directors to develop department‑specific programs and quality measures in accordance with standards of Joint Commission, CMS, TDSHS, OSHA, and other applicable laws. Claims Management Assists the CEO in processing summons and complaints served on the hospital and its employees. Assists Corporate Risk Management in intervening, documenting, and investigating claims. Coordinates investigation of claims within the facility. Compliance Program Conducts and facilitates in‑services to educate employees and physicians. Participates in developing and reviewing policies and procedures. Operates a system ensuring hospital and employee adherence to the UHS Compliance Program. Committee Participation Performance Improvement Patient Safety Council Peer Review Other committees/meetings as necessary. Employee/Physician Education Facilitates, develops, and provides educational programs to ensure employees and medical staff understand risk management, performance improvement, and compliance concepts relevant to their roles. Plans and presents risk management information at hospital orientation. Plans and presents topics to committees or departments based on occurrences or claim patterns. Reporting, Report Preparation and Submission Provides aggregate analysis of risk and performance improvement data and trends to committees and departments. Reports directly to Administration incidents with claim potential. Medical Staff Advises the Medical Director and Medical Executive Committee as needed. Provides advice to physicians on issues such as informed consent, documentation, communication, accountability, and patient/family complaints. Qualifications Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required. Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related health field preferred. Master’s Degree preferred. Combination of education and experience considered. Experience: Four (4) years of experience in quality and risk management/improving organizational performance within an acute medical or psychiatric treatment setting. Additional Requirements: Strong knowledge of Joint Commission, Texas state standards, CMS standards, and applicable federal and state laws governing mental health care facilities.
