Nursing Assistant / Health Unit Coordinator Mother Baby Unit – Sherman Hospital Major Responsibilities Assists RN with daily care of patients including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, and ambulation, using therapeutic assistive devices, proper positioning, range of motion, and special transferring as indicated. Measures and documents blood pressures, TPRs, I & O, daily weights, and other patient data as requested. Documents accurately in Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Participates in admission, transfer, and discharge processes under RN supervision, including room set up, orientation, removing linen, and managing patient belongings. Ensures patient call light is always in reach and answers call‑lights promptly. Performs purposeful rounding under RN direction and promptly communicates observations, concerns, and patient/family needs to RN. Documents observations and concerns appropriately. Performs patient positioning and transporting duties that require lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique and assistive devices. Administers nutritional tasks under RN direction, including diet review, tray set up/removal, proper positioning, and diet selection. Maintains skin integrity through proper repositioning and skin care. Ensures special patient supplies and appliances (e.g., TED hose, sequential compression devices) are provided and maintained. Collects urine, stool, and sputum specimens and performs point‑of‑care testing as indicated, ensuring accurate specimen labeling and identification; maintains required competency. May be required to remove IVs, provide post‑mortem care, and perform bladder scans under RN direction or as dictated by site/unit requirements. Practices infection prevention policies, demonstrating hand hygiene, sterile and aseptic procedures, proper disposal of contaminated materials, and appropriate attire when in direct contact with isolated patients. Coordinates tests and treatments with various departments to support patients on nursing units. Maintains knowledge of diagnostic and treatment department functions to facilitate scheduling of tests and treatments. Maintains working knowledge of EHR systems and other computer systems for ordering patient and unit supplies and equipment. Processes daily patient charges and related procedures through the system. Facilitates communications required for patient care, including multi‑line telephone, unit/site paging, and the hospital information system. Screens incoming telephone calls. Monitors department office equipment, troubleshoots minor problems, and arranges repair of major malfunctions. Compiles required chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges, and expirations. Obtains appropriate copies of medical records for transfers to nursing homes and other health care facilities. Verifies medical records contain complete and accurate patient demographic information, identification, and registration, including appropriate level of care. Establishes and maintains positive customer relations, acknowledges requests promptly, responds to call lights, demonstrates proper phone etiquette, and fosters communication among the health care team. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles over the lifespan, assessing patient data, interpreting information, and applying it relative to age‑specific needs as described in department policies and procedures. Education / Experience Required Education: High School Graduate, or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). Experience: No experience required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Basic computer skills. Excellent oral and written communication. Excellent organizational skills and ability to set priorities. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities/workloads. High level of attention to detail. Certification addendum — team members will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g., DNV, CARF, or others). Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required
- Nurse Aide in good standing with the State Registry in which the team member practices.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) to be obtained within 45 days.
