Lateral Police Officer

Position Overview Lateral Police Officer for the Fairbanks Police Department (FPD). Candidates must be certified by their state’s police certification process and certified within five years. Compensation Base salary: $60,000.00. Eligible out-of-state lateral officers may receive a $60,000.00 bonus subject to an additional contract. Department & Hours Fairbanks Police Department (FPD). 40 hours per week; shifts vary. Location 911 Cushman Street, Fairbanks, Alaska. Requirements & Responsibilities To qualify as a lateral officer, applicants must have completed a state certified training academy with at least 650 hours, at least one year of experience with a full-service law enforcement agency, and be now or have been certified within five years as a police officer in their jurisdiction. The FPD will work with the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) to approve certification. Once approved, applicants will undergo abbreviated police academy training and field training which may be shortened depending on progress. Key duties include enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, responding to complaints, traffic regulation, investigations, evidence collection, report maintenance, court testimony, and coordination with other agencies. Training and required skills encompass: use of firearms, emergency vehicle operation, handcuffing, first aid, rescue operations, vehicle pursuits, and physical endurance activities including walking, running, carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, crawling, twisting, and other movements. Minimum Qualifications Citizen of the United States by date of hire. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. At least 21 years old by date of hire. Valid State of Alaska driver’s license by date of hire. Must meet APSC and FPD standards regarding criminal convictions, traffic violations, and controlled substances. Specifically: no criminal convictions after age 18; no marijuana use within the past year. Must obtain APSC certification within 13 months of hire. Must obtain APSIN/NCIC certification within thirty days of hire. Background check approved at time of hire. Probationary Period Expectations Analyze situations quickly and objectively. Read and understand laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations. Cope with stressful situations with respect for individual rights. Perform assignments under extreme weather conditions. Communicate clearly, verbally and in writing. Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and citizens from varied backgrounds. Develop and maintain firearm and equipment skills. Learn and apply investigative techniques. Use first aid correctly. Observe and remember details. Drive light duty passenger vehicles skillfully. Physical strength and agility sufficient for job demands. Physical Demands Operate various machines and equipment, including motor vehicles, bicycles, computers, and radios. Stand and walk on uneven surfaces about 30% of the day; office duties require standing ~10% of the day. Sit in patrol vehicle 60% of the day and in office for ~20% of the day. Carry objects up to 1,000 feet in distance and up to 250 pounds in weight; routinely 10-50 pounds. Push and pull weights up to 180-250 pounds under emergency conditions; routinely 10-50 pounds. Bend, pull, reach, twist, climb, crawl, and run as required by the role. Maintain normal color discrimination, binocular vision, peripheral vision, and hearing. Corrected visual acuity 20/30 or better in each eye. Physical, Cognitive, and Motor Skill Requirements Requirements include normal color discrimination, binocular coordination, peripheral vision, and hearing; ability to navigate police work under challenging conditions; strong motor coordination, manual dexterity, and spatial recognition.
