Interdisciplinary Biologist/Hydrologist/Geologist/Cartographer

Summary Salary dependent upon the agreed upon duty location of the position. Locality pay tables can be found here. This is an interdisciplinary position that may be filled as a Biologist GS‑0401, Hydrologist GS‑1315, Geologist GS‑1350, or Cartographer GS‑1370. Duties Reviews and approves for release all types of technical interpretive information products, regardless of media, authored by USGS employees Consults with scientific staff, supervisors, and managers to facilitate information product reviews by serving as a source of first recourse and final authority for issues related to the appropriate application of USGS Fundamental Science Practices and other policies related to USGS scientific information products Provides advice regarding product deficiencies and makes recommendations on how to strengthen proposed or current work Works with peers, the Executive Leadership Team, and the Fundamental Science Practices Advisory Council to improve USGS Fundamental Science Practices, ensure consistency in application of standards and increase efficiency in processing USGS information products Requirements Conditions of Employment Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period. More requirements are listed under Qualifications and Other Information. Special Requirements Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. Qualifications GS‑0401 Basic Education Requirement A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. GS‑1315 Basic Education Requirement A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The coursework must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. OR B. A combination of education and experience‑course work as shown in “A” above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in “A” above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. GS‑1350 Basic Education Requirement A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology coursework included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. OR B. A combination of education and experience‑course work as shown in “A” above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in “A” above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. GS‑1370 Basic Education Requirement A. Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such coursework includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e. college-level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR B. Combination of education and experience—courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a minor that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in “A” above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above.

GS‑14

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of professional experience equivalent to the GS‑13 level performing senior scientific or technical review work that required independent judgment and subject‑matter expertise. Examples of qualifying experience include reviewing scientific or technical information products , providing authoritative guidance on policy or standards , and identifying deficiencies or recommending improvements to strengthen scientific work . Work at this level typically involves resolving complex review issues and representing an informed, authoritative viewpoint in discussions with scientists and leadership. Education Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
