Position Overview
The South Pasadena Police Department is seeking a qualified professional to take on the role of Police Dispatcher!


Current Starting Salary: Up to $76,356 depending on qualifications (DOQ)

Purpose
This is a non-sworn position with an assigned work schedule of 3-12, 4-10 or 5-8 work schedule depending upon assignment. Under the general supervision of the Watch Commander, handles communications responsibilities by receiving emergency and routine calls and dispatching law enforcement personnel, processes arrestees, including booking and transport to Pasadena Police Department or Sheriff's Central Jail, and performs other duties as required which are deemed beneficial to the Department.

Duties & Responsibilities

Examples of Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, receiving emergency and routine calls for law enforcement service and dispatching appropriate personnel;

Maintaining radio contact and status of in-field units;

Coordinating with City departments, emergency services, and other government agencies;

Monitoring of other radio frequencies; entering, updating, and retrieving information from national, state and local computer systems;

Maintaining a daily dispatch log; training of other communications personnel;

Receiving reports and complaints from the public by phone and in person;

Providing for the processing, security, health, and welfare of persons in custody; transporting of persons in custody to court and from other law enforcement agencies;

Gathering information and completing reports of selected police incidents;

Providing parking enforcement by issuing citations and towing vehicles for California Vehicle Code and City ordinance violations; assisting with traffic and crowd control;

Processing of evidence and financial transactions;

Accurately preparing related forms and reports for all assigned tasks;

Performing clerical work as required.


Police Assistants may be required to work additional or overtime shifts consistent with Department policies.

Qualifications

Employment Standards
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent. Prior dispatch experience (preferably in the public sector) is highly desirable.

Special Requirements
A valid California driver license; completion of a P.O.S.T Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course before or within one year from date of appointment.


Knowledge of:
English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; typewriter/computer keyboarding; general office procedures and equipment.

Ability to:
Understand and communicate tactfully with the public, persons in custody, and fellow employees; function appropriately in emergency and routine situations with the public, persons in custody, and fellow employees; accurately interpret codes and ordinances and apply investigative techniques to assess compliance; follow through on assignments; make logical interpretations, and come to conclusions from studying facts; operate specified Police Department equipment necessary for completion of daily tasks, such as, but not limited to, police dispatch and records equipment, police computer equipment, police vehicle and portable radios, and police patrol vehicles.

Physical Demands
Candidates must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, climb at least five flights of stairs unassisted, coordinate eyes, hands, and fingers in typing; exert light to moderate physical effort, and exert sufficient force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and safely and legally control persons in custody.

SELECTION PROCESS : Candidates considered for employment must successfully complete a typing speed exam, a POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery exam (or have received an exemption waiver), an oral interview, a polygraph, an extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, and a medical examination.

You may qualify to be exempt from the typing speed test , if you can attach a typing certificate that contains the following: - Applicant's name
- Name of issuing agency
- Signature of agency representative certifying the certificate
- Date of administration (Test must be dated within one year of application due date)
- Five minute timed test indicating the gross typing speed, errors and NET typing speed. Net typing score of 40 wpm or more.
- Online or self-administered tests will not be accepted


A copy of your typing certificate must be attached to the application to be considered for exemption.You may qualify to be exempt from the POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Exam , if you can provide proof of completing one of the following:

(1) Achievement of a passing score of 48 on the POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery. The score must be provided on the agency's letterhead and completed within 365 days of filing application OR
(2) Proof of successful completion of the POST certified Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course (80 hours minimum) AND completion of probation as a public safety dispatcher during previous employment OR
(3) Possess a valid California POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate.

A copy of your proof must be attached to the application to be considered for exemption.

Effective January 1, 2026, the City agrees to provide the following monthly contributions to the Police Officer's Association (POA):

Employee Only: $825
Employee + 1: $1,560
Employee + Family: $1,860

The City provides up to $75.00 per month for employee and dependent dental coverage through Ameritas Dental Services.

The City provides up to $20.00 per month for employee and dependent vision care coverage through Ameritas Eye Care.

The City provides a Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy via Mutual Of Omaha Insurance Company in the amount of $100,000 for POA employees at no cost to them. Additional coverage shall be made available from the City at the employee's expense.

The City shall grant eleven (11) federally recognized holidays to all POA employees with compensation based on the number of hours affected on the employee's regular work schedule.

POA employees become eligible for three (3) floating holidays after six (6) months of service. Once accrued, floating holidays must be taken within the same fiscal year in which they are accrued.

POA employees accrue vacation time at regular intervals beginning at eighty-eight (88) hours upon completing their first year of service. Refer to POA 2025-2028 for more information.

Employees shall accrue paid sick leave at the rate of 3.69 hours per pay period.

Employees shall receive three (3) shifts of paid bereavement leave each fiscal year after being employed by the City for six (6) consecutive months.

Employees who can communicate conversationally in Spanish or Chinese on a regular or reoccurring basis shall receive an additional $125 in compensation per month. Employees will be required to pass a bilingual proficiency test prior to receiving such compensation.

The City shall provide new Police Officer hires the needed uniform and equipment. Sworn POA employees shall receive $800 per year thereafter for the purchase of uniforms and equipment. Non-sworn employees shall receive $600 per year for the purchase of uniforms and equipment. Additionally, POA employees shall receive a uniform cleaning allowance of $400 per year.

Employees assigned to work the night shift shall receive a shift differential pay increase of 3% over their base pay during the term of such assignment.

The City shall contribute 1% of an employee's base salary to their deferred compensation plan.

The City will provide employees with a reimbursement of up to $55 per month for a single membership pass to a local YMCA or an equivalent gym/fitness membership for each employee to promote health and wellness.

The City provides up to $80 per month in reimbursement for employees who utilize alternative means of transportation to work other than a personal automobile.

Additional 5% of base pay for possession of Intermediate POST Certificate; 10% for Advanced POST Certificate.

Educational incentive of $200 per month for Bachelor's Degree
Educational incentive of $300 per month for Master's Degree

4% COLA effective 07/01/2027
New Salary Step 6 added effective 07/01/2026 for sworn employees. Advancement to Step 6 requires completion of 7 years of experience with the City.


Safety
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2.5% at 57 formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2% @ 50 benefit formula.
All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
Non-Safety
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% at 62 formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2% @ 55 benefit formula.
All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
