Phlebotomist II
The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality laboratory services by performing venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, ensuring accurate labeling and handling of specimens, and supporting smooth workflow in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. This role also contributes to troubleshooting, training, and recommending process improvements to enhance efficiency and patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure understanding and cooperation.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate association of patient information and test orders.
- Accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens for transport, following specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity and appropriate chain of custody.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following detailed protocol instructions.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
- Update patient information accurately in relevant systems to ensure complete and current records.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and best practices.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to respond to inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Identify workflow issues, assist with troubleshooting, and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality of service.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures when needed.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2–4 years of overall related experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
- Proficiency in performing venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test requirements.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Solid understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Effective communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to respond to inquiries.

- Strong organizational skills to manage specimen handling, documentation, and transport preparation.
- Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and communicating laboratory results in a clear and professional manner.
- Willingness to attend ongoing training and adapt to updated procedures and protocols.
- Capability to assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and recommending process improvements.
Work Environment
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that requires consistent attention to detail and adherence to safety and regulatory standards. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen tubes, and collection containers, as well as computers and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The environment involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, as well as handling biological specimens that must be stored and transported under specific temperature and procedural requirements. Annual department trainings and ongoing compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations are integral parts of the work setting. The position may require standing for extended periods and following standard clinical attire appropriate for a laboratory or hospital environment.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
