Traveling Project Manager

Position Summary Our Project Managers are experienced in commercial HVAC and Mechanical Construction and enjoy the challenge of unique designs, projects and deadlines. You will be able to run jobs big and small, coordinating multiple jobs simultaneously, while also providing leadership to project engineers and partnering with our field staff to ensure flawless project delivery. You will also manage project milestones, identifying and coordinating resource requirements. One of the most important skill sets you possess is the ability to exercise a high level of judgment and work autonomously within company processes. You are willing to learn the Southland way of doing work and are eager to learn from others at all levels of the organization. You are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and execute all levels of project management activities and responsibilities; you can perform without extensive support staff. This role can be for a traveling PM who is able to be at the project site during the week and travel home on the weekend or, if you are ready to take on a new adventure, a relocation package is part of the deal for the right candidate. Position Details Provide support to a single large project or multiple projects being managed by Senior Project Managers and Project Engineers. Work with craftsmen, foremen and the owner on self‑performing work. Help plan projects from start to finish with an understanding of all moving parts involved and what it takes to manage the process. Utilize LEAN principles and have a keen understanding of what the owner wants and how we can deliver. Play a key role in managing the financials and ensuring the project stays on track. Develop and nurture customer relationships beyond a single project – at Southland we value customers for life. Mentor early‑career professionals and help prepare them for the next step in their profession, in line with our core value “People.” Qualifications Strong knowledge of building systems, HVAC, mechanical, process piping, including design, construction and how these systems work. Fanatical about planning, innovating and improving the processes we use every day. Ability to plan 3 to 6 months out and know what it takes to achieve successful progress and outcomes. Experience running a job, tracking production in the field and building relationships that inspire people to work hard for you. Creativity and outside‑box thinking to lead the team in driving innovative construction techniques and prefabrication strategies. Strong experience managing mechanical construction projects for a mechanical company. Accountable and takes initiative on projects; accountability is one of Southland’s highest values. Creative problem‑solving and proven experience in the trenches. Strong leadership skills, business acumen and integrity. Good understanding of the financials of a project and how to forecast. Strong relationships with the field and an understanding of how to get the best out of your people. Collaborative spirit working with multiple stakeholders to achieve mutual outcomes. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management, 7‑10+ years experience in a related field. Experience working at an MEP firm managing multiple MEP projects is a must! Experience on projects with process piping is a big plus. Experience with Design/Build and IPD project experience is a plus. Familiarity or experience with Lean Construction tools is a plus.
