Learning and Student Success Coach Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) is dedicated to humanistic health care education and fostering a supportive learning environment. Job Summary Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean of Academic Support, the Learning & Student Success Coach supports student academic achievement through the development and delivery of learning support services, academic success programming, and individualized skill‑building strategies. This position works collaboratively with students, faculty, and campus partners to promote effective learning techniques, academic resilience, and student persistence in a higher education environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with a variety of psycho‑educational measures, standardized exams, and test‑taking strategies and ability to analyze learning outcomes and identify underlying reasons for individual differences in learning. Familiarity with the structure, rigor, and demands of graduate/professional or health sciences education. Adeptness and comfort as a team player, exhibiting a strong, collaborative spirit. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds, including students, staff, faculty, administration, and outside constituents. Excellent communicative skills, maintaining a calm and professional attitude, cultural sensitivity, and confidentiality. Ability to work autonomously and productively, managing time and completing tasks in a high‑paced environment. Experience working with students under performance pressure in an academic environment. Ability to collaborate with faculty to support at‑risk students and respond to faculty concerns. Ability to oversee the administration and interpretation of assessments to identify obstacles to student achievement and retention. Ability to develop and facilitate innovative workshops and small‑group activities promoting academic success of new, at‑risk, and enrolled students in didactic and clinical education. Ability to provide personalized, in‑person and online support services, including metacognitive awareness, learning for retention, test‑taking strategies, study planning, and time management. Strong presentation and facilitation skills, including public speaking and audience engagement. Adaptive and willing to reach students on innovative platforms, researching and developing interactive modules for deployment. Ability to collaborate with university support services to assist learners with learning challenges and create solutions to overcome barriers. Knowledge of the cognitive science of learning and its application in graduate health sciences education. Commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in higher education, educational psychology, health professions education, a clinical discipline, or a closely related field. Three to five years of related experience in educational support, preferably in learning skills service or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience providing educational assessment and intervention strategies to diverse adult learners, preferably in health sciences or STEM education. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree is preferred. Advanced clinical, educational, or health professions background (e.g., OD, Ed.D., Ph.D., Psy.D.) with experience in graduate/professional student learning support, psycho‑educational assessment, or academic coaching. Familiarity with optometric, health sciences, or other rigorous graduate/professional education environments and associated licensure or credentialing processes. Academic coaching certification (e.g., InsideTrack, CTEDU). Key Responsibilities Conduct initial and ongoing academic coaching sessions with optometry students to evaluate learning behaviors, study strategies, time management, and test‑taking approaches. Assess, identify, evaluate, and resolve learning issues using validated psycho‑educational assessment tools and recommend strategies. Design personalized student academic services and interventions based on best practices for learning mastery and retention. Implement strategies and programs specific to the academic and personal needs of optometry students. Support and guide students in adopting evidence‑based study strategies and applying the cognitive science of learning. Assist matriculating students and, on occasion, alumni in developing licensure examination study plans. Maintain organized records of students’ performance and improvement, and submit regular reports on progress. Make recommendations and referrals for learning assessments, screening, testing, or other support services as needed. Support the Student Performance Committee and faculty in the remediation process. Design and implement workshops specific to the needs of optometry students and faculty. Participate in curricular content in relevant areas. Collaborate with departments such as the Center for Disability & Health Policy and the Learning Enhancement & Academic Development Office to provide comprehensive support. Perform other duties as assigned; the university reserves the right to add or change duties.
