Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide assistance in all dining service functions as directed/instructed by the Consultant Dietitian/Diet Technician/Health Center Supervisor. The duties will be performed in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, and Vicar's Landing policies and procedures.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Serve meals that are palatable, appetizing in appearance and in accordance with standardized recipes, portion control, time schedules and sanitation standards. May assist cooks and/or in other food preparation and service areas as required. Set up trays, food carts, dining room, etc. as instructed. Work tray line in assigned stations. Assemble production of foods as per tally sheets.
• Assist in maintaining the Dining Services department in a safe sanitary manner. Use proper procedures to serve, clear, clean, and reset tables for Health Center Dining rooms. Transport soiled dishes, flatware, linen, utensils, glassware etc. from dining rooms to dish machine area/kitchen. Keep the Health Center Dining Rooms, pantries, refrigerators and equipment clean and orderly. Perform daily or scheduled cleaning duties in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Distribute and collect menus as directed. Deliver nourishments to assigned nursing stations. Participate in programs designed for In Service education, on the job training and orientation for newly assigned department personnel.
• Obey all safety and sanitation guidelines set up by Dining Services Department, Vicar's Landing as well as Federal, State and local laws including personal hygiene and adherence to dress code.
• Report to work as scheduled.
• Perform any other duties directed by your supervisor or any other member of management staff.
• Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and experience equivalent to four years high school or GED, with particular emphasis during high school in office skills, shop skills, or others, plus 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; Ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication. Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few known variables in situations of a routine nature.

Moderate mental demand. Operations requiring almost continuous attention, but work is sufficiently repetitive that a habit cycle is formed; operations requiring intermittent directed thinking to determine or select materials, equipment or operations where variable sequences may be selected by the employee.

Repetitive. Activities or duties using a pre-determined set of processes or directions coupled with nearby supervision. Learned things in situations where choice is simple or patterned.

Regularly responsible for property where carelessness or error would result in only minor damage or minor monetary loss. Almost continuous care and attention is required when handling this property in order to prevent loss.

Probable errors of internal and external scope would have a moderate effect on the operational efficiency of the organizational component concerned. Errors might possibly go undetected for a considerable period of time, thereby creating an inaccurate picture of an existing situation. Could cause further errors, losses, or embarrassment to the organization. The possibility for error is always present due to requirements of the job.

Frequent contacts with general public, patrons, or other outside representatives, wherein the manner of handling these contacts has a bearing on the organization's position and operation.

Contacts of considerable importance within the department or office, such as those required in coordination of effort, or frequent contacts with other departments or offices, generally in normal course of performing duties. Requires tact in discussing problems and presenting data and making recommendations, but responsibility for action and decision reverts to others.

Occasional use of complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, road and production machines and equipment, etc.)

Disagreeable working conditions. Exposed to several of the elements in degree 2, which are present continuously enough to make the conditions disagreeable. May involve heavy travel and/or work is in the evening during the night hours.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Moderate diversity, moderately physical. Work activities which allow for a moderate amount of diversity in the performance of tasks which requires somewhat diversified physical demands of the employee.

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear; and frequently required to stand, taste or smell; occasionally required to walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; color vision; and depth perception.

Ability to read, write and speak English, perform simple arithmetic and follow oral instructions in English.

Ability to interpret and explain the menu, refer or answer questions, coordinate the meal service process and respond to requests.

Must be able to lift and carry a 30 pound service tray 30 feet. Must be able to push or pull a loaded cart to the Health Center Dining Room.

Must be able to bend and pick up items from the floor, reach above head to remove items from shelf.

Ability to work in close cooperation with Residents, guest and staff with courtesy, tact and graciousness.

Must possess the fundamental understanding of hospitality, customer service table service technique, personal hygiene and appearance.

Must be at least 16 years of age to work during school hours.
