Job Description

The Allman Institute is a translational research organization applying personalized medicine to treat severe and historically difficult-to-treat diseases, beginning with pulmonary fibrosis and chronic lung transplant dysfunction. The Institute combines deep molecular profiling, longitudinal clinical data, and a pragmatic mix of mechanism-guided and large-scale empirical approaches to accelerate therapeutic discovery and translation.

We pursue an ambitious and pragmatic, modality-agnostic therapeutic strategy spanning genetic medicines, molecular and pharmacologic therapies, cell and immune-based interventions, and engineered biological systems, in close collaboration with leading academic and clinical partners to leading academic and biotech partners across the U.S. and abroad. The Institute is established as a nonprofit, backed by substantial long-term capital committed directly to the mission. Where strategically valuable, we may pursue mission-aligned for-profit ventures, spin-outs, and partnerships to accelerate therapeutic development and patient impact.

We are a small but rapidly growing team of approximately 20, scaling to 40–50 over the next year across labs and offices in Redwood City, CA and Cambridge, MA, driven by scientific rigor, translational urgency, and a patient-anchored mandate.

As the organization grows, the Institute is seeking a Senior Recruiter or Talent Lead to build talent pipelines, run searches with rigor and speed, and help bring exceptional people into a mission-driven research environment.

Responsibilities

Recruiting and Search Execution

  • Lead full-cycle recruiting for scientific, clinical, operational, technical, and business roles across the Institute.

  • Partner closely with hiring managers and leadership to define role scopes, candidate profiles, compensation context, and interview processes.

  • Draft and refine job descriptions that accurately reflect the Institute’s needs and attract strong candidates.

  • Source candidates proactively through direct outreach, referrals, scientific and professional networks, and external recruiting channels.

  • Manage candidate pipelines from first contact through offer stage with strong follow-through, sound judgment, and excellent communication.

Candidate Assessment and Hiring Process Design

  • Conduct initial screens to evaluate candidate fit, motivation, communication, and alignment with the Institute’s mission, stage, and operating style.

  • Help design thoughtful, rigorous interview processes tailored to different functions, including scientific leadership, translational research, clinical, and operational roles.

  • Coordinate interview scheduling, interviewer preparation, candidate materials, and post-interview feedback collection.

  • Maintain a high standard of candidate experience and ensure the recruiting process is organized, responsive, and professional.

Talent Strategy

  • Build recruiting processes that can support a growing organization with a mix of on-site, hybrid, and remote employees.

  • Develop talent maps for priority hiring areas, including scientific leadership, translational research, clinical functions, engineering, operations, and business development.

  • Advise leadership on market realities, title calibration, organizational design, and sequencing of hires.

  • Build long-term relationships with prospective candidates who may not be immediate fits but could become relevant as the Institute grows.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Work closely with Institute leadership and functional heads to understand evolving hiring needs and organizational priorities.

  • Coordinate with operations and administrative teams on offer logistics, onboarding, and recruiting documentation.

  • Manage external recruiters when appropriate while building strong in-house recruiting capability.

  • Help ensure hiring processes are confidential, well documented, and consistently executed.

Qualifications

Required

  • 7+ years of recruiting experience, ideally including in-house recruiting for biotech, life sciences, healthcare, research organizations, or other highly specialized environments.

  • Demonstrated success recruiting across a range of functions, including scientific, technical, clinical, operational, and leadership roles.

  • Strong judgment about candidate quality, role fit, and how to assess people in small, fast-moving organizations.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and project management skills.

  • Ability to run multiple searches simultaneously while keeping hiring managers and candidates well informed.

  • Strong professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Experience recruiting for biotech or translational medicine roles such as research scientists, clinical development, regulatory, CMC, bioinformatics, engineering, or platform teams.

  • Familiarity with the Bay Area biotech talent market and relevant talent pools in Boston/Cambridge.

  • Experience supporting executive or senior scientific leadership searches.

  • Ability to contribute to broader talent operations, including employer branding, recruiting analytics, and process design.

  • Comfort working in an organization where priorities evolve quickly and some roles are shaped in real time.

Location and Work Environment

This position may be based in the San Francisco Bay Area or another location that allows close coordination with Institute leadership and hiring managers. Regular interaction with teams in Redwood City and other Institute locations will be important, whether on-site or through a hybrid arrangement.

About the Role

This role is intended for someone who can combine strong search execution with mature judgment about people, teams, and organizational fit. The Senior Recruiter or Talent Lead will help shape how the Institute grows by identifying outstanding candidates, running disciplined hiring processes, and helping leadership make strong decisions as the organization scales.
