Description:
The Certified Medical Assistant performs and assists with a variety of basic patient care activities.
This is done under the direction of a physician and the supervision of a licensed nurse.
Responsibilities include conducting peripheral venipuncture to collect blood samples from patients and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis.
Assistance with the administration of oral medications and via subcutaneous and intramuscular routes is required, as directed by the licensed nurse.
The role also includes assisting nurses with EKGs and other diagnostic tests and clinical procedures in accordance with health services policies and procedures.
Attendance at sick calls with the physician to see patients is expected, which includes preparing a list of patients to be examined and preparing the examining room and equipment.
The Certified Medical Assistant will perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and obstructed airway techniques.
Dressing and bandaging wounds, as well as assisting with the immobilization of bone and joint injuries, is part of the role.
Providing oxygen therapy and inserting nasal and oral airways as directed by a licensed nurse is also required.
Assistance with urinary catheterizations is expected.
Monitoring, recording, and reporting vital signs and the patient's condition as needed is essential, as well as contacting doctors and supervisors when necessary.
Skills required include utilizing proper body mechanics to assist with moving, lifting, carrying, and conveying patients.
Control and inventory of medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment must align with established procedures.
Keeping equipment and work areas clean while utilizing appropriate sanitation methods is necessary.
Documentation and reporting activities must be conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Maintaining the security and confidentiality of all medical records is imperative.
Observation and recording of patient behavior is required.
Secure storage of medical unit supplies and equipment or ensuring safe disposal is necessary.
Preparation and maintenance of various standard records, reports, and logs must be done using proper grammar.
Safety and accident reports must be prepared and disseminated as required by policy, taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
Effective communication with administration, staff, patients, and the general public is crucial, particularly in situations requiring tact and good judgment.
Coordinating the movement of patients to and from different areas for medical treatment is a part of the job.
Reliably identifying patients through visual means is expected.
The role may involve working in confined areas and handling situations involving security checks.
Enduring verbal and mental abuse in a challenging environment is part of the job.
Medical care for patients may expose the assistant to body fluids and potentially contagious individuals.
Compliance with applicable regulations, laws, and procedures is necessary.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relations with others is important.
Problem-solving and data collection skills are required.
Mathematical proficiency in basic calculations, including fractions and percentages, is expected.
Interpreting a variety of medical and technical instructions is necessary.
