The Bureau of Patrol in the Chicago Police Department is responsible for the day-to-day policing and law enforcement activities across the city. It’s the largest bureau within the department and comprises various districts, each headed by a district commander. The districts are geographically grouped into six (6) areas, with each Area overseen by a Deputy Chief.

Patrol officers are the backbone of the department, tasked with responding to emergency calls, conducting patrols, enforcing laws, and maintaining public safety. The bureau also includes specialized units such as the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) and Central Detention Unit which support patrol efforts in specific areas. Overall, the Bureau of Patrol plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of Chicago residents.

Responsibilities:

• Responding to Calls: Answer emergency (911) and non-emergency calls for service, assistance, and public disturbances.
• Patrolling Neighborhoods: Conduct routine patrols on foot, in vehicles, or via specialized units to deter crime and maintain visibility.
• Enforcing Laws: Enforce criminal statutes, city ordinances, and traffic codes.
• Investigating Incidents: Conduct preliminary investigations at crime or accident scenes, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and file detailed reports.
• Arresting Suspects: Apprehend, search, and process suspected law violators, and testify in court when required.
• Community Engagement: Uphold professional and impartial policing standards to build trust and assist community members in crisis.

Requirements:

• 21 years of age or older
• Valid drivers license
• US citizen or legal resident
• 60 hours form a college or university or 30 hours plus 1 year of continuous active US military duty or 2 years continuous US military service
