Phlebotomist II Position in Stony BrookThe Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling of samples, and supporting smooth laboratory workflow in a fast-paced environment. This role also contributes to troubleshooting, training, and recommending process improvements to enhance efficiency and maintain high standards of safety and compliance.ResponsibilitiesPerform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.Explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport in accordance with established guidelines and protocols.Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.Follow specific procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport to ensure sample quality and compliance.Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required.Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation of all activities.Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.Attend and complete annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen handling processes.Support and participate in training activities as needed to help onboard or guide other team members.Essential SkillsValid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.At least 2 years of experience using straight needles for venipuncture.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High school diploma or GED.Demonstrated ability to perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, record maintenance data, and perform decontamination tasks.Ability to accurately update and manage patient information.Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy when matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and verifying orders.Ability to understand and follow physicians' orders and laboratory protocols.Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety practices.Strong communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to inquiries by phone.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience working in a high-volume phlebotomy site handling 100+ patients per day.Experience working as part of a multi-person phlebotomy team in a busy environment.Comfort using both straight needles and butterfly needles for a variety of patient populations.Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and patient focus.Willingness to participate in ongoing training and process improvement initiatives.Work EnvironmentThis is a non-float Phlebotomist II position based in a busy, high-volume site that serves more than 100 patients per day. The schedule runs Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The site typically has 2–3 team members working during the week to support the high patient volume, and on weekends it maintains a similar number of draws within a shorter operating window. The environment is fast paced and collaborative, with multiple phlebotomists working together to manage patient flow and maintain accuracy and specimen integrity. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and appropriate specimen containers and storage devices. The role requires consistent adherence to safety protocols, regulatory standards, and proper handling and storage procedures for all specimens.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Stony Brook, NY.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
