Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Airfield Maintenance Technician I is responsible for various activities related to the day-to-day operations and duties associated with the safety, operations, maintenance, and security of a municipal airport. Heavy emphasis is placed on the ability to respond to and take appropriate action to issues as they arise and to maintain the operational functionality.

Job Description

The Airfield Maintenance Technician I performs technical work in the operations and duties associated with the safety, daily operations, maintenance, and security of the municipal airport.

Essential Functions

1. Assists in maintaining the airport in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules for airfield security, City codified ordinances, and general airport rules and environmental regulations.

2. Performs both semi-skilled and skilled labor in the Aircraft Operations Area (AOA) of all City of Dallas owned and operated airports; participates in pavement repair and markings, security fencing, airfield grass and weed control, snow and ice removal, and other grounds maintenance duties performed on airport property.

3. Performs daily safety, security and operational inspections of the airport's equipment, runways, taxiways, perimeter fences and gates for compliance with Federal, State, and local airport rules and regulations.

4. Establishes, measures and aligns airfield markings and operates walk behind and motorized painting machinery; applies reflective materials to the painted markings.

5. Operates tractors, riding mowers, or weed cutting tools as appropriate for the location and terrain; applies the appropriate weed control products for the specific location, using a variety of chemical broadcast systems.

6. Performs repairs based on the type and extent of damage to concrete or asphalt, and selects best equipment and process in compliance with regulations; uses correct equipment and tools including personal protective equipment to perform repairs as needed.

7. Operates Runway Broom pulled by a large truck, deicing spray applicator, sand spreading trucks, dry chemical deice spreaders, loaders and conveyor systems, as required to keep runways and taxiways open.

8. Responds to and provides assistance as needed, during aircraft emergencies facility equipment failure, airfield lighting failures, building/structure emergencies, pavement failures, hazardous incidents, and related emergency situations.

9. Maintains work records, maintenance and repair logs, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, FAA inspection records, and other documentation; assists the public by properly responding to routine questions or complaints and requests for service; responds as dispatched by Airport Police to remove vehicles from the terminal area that violate TSA regulations.

10. Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

1. Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.

2. Knowledge of the safe operation of trucks, tools, and equipment according to airport operating and safety procedures.

3. Ability to perform a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in maintenance and repair of airport facilities and equipment.

4. Ability to operate a variety of simple to complex power tools or power equipment used in construction or landscaping.

5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of people.

6. Knowledge of Applicable laws, standards and regulations relation to airport operations and safety precautions.

7. Ability to communicate via two-way radio with the Federal Aviation Association FAA and Air Traffic Controller.

8. Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.

Experience

One (1) year of general construction, maintenance, or repair experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Movement Area Certification within the first (6) months of employment

CDL - Group B - Commercial Driver's License within the first (6) months of employment

Education

High School Diploma or GED

Salary Range

$21.67 - $23.60
