Hiring Incentive : $10,000 for entry level Deputy Sheriff. Entry-Level: Lateral candidates need not take written exam. Lateral Hire: $25,000 hiring incentive, 80 hours sick leave immediately, 80 hours vacation after 6 months. Public Safety Testing will use a new written exam starting March 1, 2025.* The current test scores are accepted until February 28, 2025. If you have not scheduled a test, please do so after March 1, 2025. We encourage you to apply now so you do not have to retest. In‑person written exam administered at PST test sites throughout the Pacific Northwest (may include free, same‑day PAT). If you passed the LEO written exam and PAT within the past six months, you may add the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office under certain conditions. Check your PST account under "New Positions." Background process requires passing a physical ability test (PAT) that includes sit‑ups, push‑ups, squat thrusts, 300‑meter sprint and a 1.5‑mile run. Refer to qualifications below. Requirements Written Examination – Required. Score ≥70% to qualify; scores Physical Ability Test (PAT) – Required. Must be completed within 180 days (~6 months) before or after the written exam. Minimum Age – 21 years. High School Graduate / GED – Required. Driver's License – Valid Washington State driver’s license required. Felony Conviction – No adult felony convictions at any time. Felony Conviction – Juvenile convictions reviewed case‑by‑case. English – Ability to read, speak, and write English. Vision – Correctable to 20/20 in the better eye; not less than 20/40 in the worst eye; must distinguish between red, yellow, and green. Tattoo Policy – Face, chin, forehead tattoos prohibited; neck, behind ears, and back of the head tattoos must be concealed while on duty. Tattoos that are obscene, offensive, sexually suggestive, criminal related, or discriminatory are prohibited. Physical Ability Test (PAT) Standards 300‑meter sprint – 71 seconds max. 1.5‑mile run – 14:31 minutes max. Push‑ups – 90 reps within 90 seconds. Sit‑ups – 90 reps within 90 seconds. Squat thrusts – 35 reps within 3 minutes. Disqualifiers Automated Disqualifiers: Negligent homicide Reckless driving Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs Hit and run (attended) Denial of issuance of driver’s license / license revoked Negligent driving (accident) Driving while license suspended Potential Disqualifiers – Driving violations: must not exceed 6 total points in last 36 months. Specific point assignments for various infractions (list of zones). (Summarised list.) Drug Usage – Automatic disqualifier: No marijuana use/consumption within past 6 months; no use of all other illegal drugs in last 3 years; etc. Criminal Activity – Automatic: No adult felony convictions, no adult domestic violence statute convictions, no misdemeanors within last 3 years; juvenile convictions reviewed.
