Summary The VA Medical Center is seeking a motivated and dependable Housekeeping Aid Leader to provide working leadership to a team of Housekeeping Aids. The position ensures a clean, sanitary, and safe environment for Veterans, staff, and visitors across multiple clinical and administrative areas of the facility. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement — 07/10/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but applicants must demonstrate evidence of training or experience that shows sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Documentation must include detailed descriptions of skills, knowledge, and abilities. Applicants will be evaluated under the Office of Personnel Management Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screening for eligibility will be based on the prescribed screen‑out element. Eligible candidates will be rated on ability to lead or supervise, dexterity and safety, follow directions, handle weights and loads, and house‑keeping aptitude. Experience may include paid, unpaid, or volunteer work, including national service programs such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. The incumbent must be physically capable of walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, pushing, stretching, pulling, and lifting, and may need to climb step ladders. Duties This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. It is generally aligned under the Housekeeping Supervisor and is responsible for supporting and performing tasks associated with the EMS goals and objectives. Tours of duty may vary depending on internal department needs with weekday, weekend, day, and evening shift schedules. The Housekeeping Aid Leader performs daily housekeeping duties while leading three (3) or more employees in the full range of cleaning and sanitation tasks. Major duties include: communicating work assignments, instructions, and priorities from EMS Management to assigned employees. Setting the pace for work performance and demonstrating proper cleaning methods, techniques, supplies, and equipment usage. Coordinating cleaning projects with nurses and area supervisors to ensure timely and successful completion. Monitoring and validating the quality and completion of assigned work. Reporting employee progress, performance concerns, and training needs to the Supervisor. Ensuring compliance with EMS policies, VA regulations, safety procedures, and infection control standards. Providing on‑the‑job training, guidance, and motivation to team members. Performing a full range of housekeeping duties in areas such as outpatient surgery, clinics, sterile processing, patient care areas, laboratories, pharmacy, offices, corridors, stairwells, restrooms, and isolation rooms. Completing tasks including dust mopping, damp mopping, waste removal, medical waste handling, wall washing, cleaning fixtures, replenishing supplies, making beds, and turning mattresses. Leading or assisting in textile distribution, inventory management, uniform management, and Patient Assistance Program functions. Moving furniture and setting up meeting or training rooms as needed. Operating industrial equipment to scrub, strip, refinish, and polish floors. Ability to lead and motivate employees in a housekeeping environment. Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation procedures, and safety protocols. Coordinate workflow, provide instructions, and ensure task completion. Physical ability to lift, move, or handle supplies, equipment, and furniture. Work Environment: The work is accomplished in various areas including operating rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards, and other public, recreational, and administrative areas. Protective clothing and PPE such as gowns, gloves, safety shoes, and masks are required for certain tasks. Work may involve exposure to strong cleaning solutions, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and hazardous chemicals. Interaction with both medical and psychiatric patients may occur. Tasks may be performed inside and outside the facility. May require some exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals. Performs additional tasks as assigned.
