Orientation Planning Committee (OPC) Member - AY 2026-27

The Orientation Planning Committee, in coordination with the Director of Orientation Programs, is responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of student Orientation Leaders. Additionally, members of the OPC help to coordinate and conduct the University's orientation program. Serving on the Committee is a 10-month position with varied hours, opportunities and obligations. Being a member of the OPC is a unique student leadership experience at Millersville University. Members are part of a team responsible for the delivery of a major University program. Members come to understand the philosophy which guides orientation and the challenges of designing and executing a program affecting thousands of individuals. In addition, members are responsible for the personal development of their peers as leaders, mentors, and representatives of the University. This is an immersive experience, which can significantly affect a student's experience as a developing leader and Marauder.

Required Qualifications: Currently enrolled Millersville University student in at least their second year of studies. Enrolled in classes at Millersville University for the Spring and Fall semesters of the upcoming year (2027). A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50 at the time of application. Demonstrated knowledge of the University's existing orientation program. Demonstrated emotional maturity and ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience as an MU Orientation Leader or Orientation Planning Committee Member. Ability to work independently outside the office environment on assigned projects. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to lead, motivate, and develop others. Ability to address conflicts, challenges and concerns in a direct and professional manner. Ability to organize and direct multiple activities simultaneously. Ability to serve as a positive role model for Orientation Leaders and incoming students.

Job Duties: Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of 20 to 50 Orientation Leaders. Specific responsibilities include: planning and delivering activities to recruit qualified candidates to apply for the Orientation Leader position. Reading applications, interviewing candidates, and recommending qualified candidates for hire. Developing and implementing a training program which meets the needs of the orientation team. Assigning work to Orientation Leaders to ensure the orientation program has adequate coverage for events and activities. Directly supervise, meet with, support, and lead a sub-team of Orientation Leaders throughout the planned orientation program. Assessing the effectiveness of Orientation Leader training and the impact of Orientation Leaders on incoming students. Meet regularly with the Director of Orientation Programs as needed or requested during the fall and spring semesters. Organize and conduct an Orientation Leader Meet & Greet program to introduce newly hired OLs to one another and provide essential information on the orientation program. Work full-time, in person, in the Student Affairs-Orientation Programs space from early August through the conclusion of the planned orientation program in late August. Serve as a "day captain" during Orientation Leader training and the orientation program by completing tasks such as: confirming the participation of internal and external program presenters. Serving as host to presenters and facilitators. Keeping the schedule for the day on track and on time. Ensuring Orientation Leaders are completing assigned work and responsibilities. Scheduling and managing breaks for Orientation Leaders. Addressing issues and challenges as they arise.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Outdoor elements such as precipitation, wind and high temperatures. Light work that includes moving objects up to 35 pounds.
