HVAC Technician - (Air Conditioning Mechanic)

The County of Riverside Facilities Management Department is seeking an HVAC Technician (Air Conditioning Mechanic) for the Norwest region. The candidate will report to the 3rd Street Maintenance Shop in Riverside and travel to multiple facilities throughout Riverside County. Responsibilities Diagnose and repair HVAC systems—including heating furnaces, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and refrigeration equipment. Respond to gas or refrigerant emergencies. Perform routine maintenance and install new air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems. Read blueprints and troubleshoot controls. Maintain electronic records, generate purchase requisitions, and document inspections and work performed. Communicate with customers, vendors, and facility staff; escort visitors in and out of facilities. Determine required parts and equipment, prepare job estimates, and perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications At least four years of journey‑level experience with commercial or public‑sector HVAC systems, including installation, repair, and maintenance. Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) is highly desirable. Universal EPA Technician Certificate under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act (required at the time of application). Valid California driver’s license, Class C, for travel to different job locations. Successful background check and completion of a pre‑employment physical exam, drug/alcohol test, and criminal background investigation. Ability to obtain a security clearance through the Sheriff’s Department. Schedule and Compensation Schedule: 4/10 schedule with workdays from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every Monday off. Includes mandatory overtime and participation in a 24/7 standby on‑call rotation (evenings, weekends, holidays, emergency call‑outs). The work schedule may change based on department needs. Compensation: Standby pay and overtime compensation for all eligible hours worked in accordance with current MOU and county policies. Uniforms are provided. Physical Requirements Extended periods of kneeling, standing, walking, and traveling between multiple job sites. Frequent kneeling, bending, crouching, climbing ladders, and working in confined or elevated spaces. Capability of lifting and carrying heavy materials and equipment such as tools, HVAC components, and refrigeration parts. Regular handling and operation of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic instruments, and mechanical equipment. Environmental Requirements The HVAC technician may be exposed to inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold, and wet conditions, while performing maintenance. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of the principles and practices of installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Familiarity with state and local laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to HVAC equipment. Ability to read and write English, follow oral and written instructions, estimate material quantities, detect malfunctions, carry out preventive maintenance programs, and keep simple records.
