San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the country and still one of the most affordable major metros in Texas no state income tax, median home prices well under the national big-city average, and established medical-center neighborhoods (Shavano Park, Stone Oak, Alamo Heights, Helotes) inside a fifteen-minute commute of the facility. The South Texas Medical Center itself is a 900-acre campus of hospitals, a medical school and research institutes, so professional depth and continuing education are local rather than a flight away. Austin is 75 minutes up I-35, the Hill Country and Gulf Coast are each about two hours, and the River Walk, Pearl District and Spurs are downtown.

The Facility

A large federal Radiation Oncology service inside the South Texas Medical Center, treating a high-volume veteran population across a fully modern therapeutic suite: Elekta linear accelerators with C-Rad/Sentinel surface guidance, IGRT with cone-beam CT, RayStation planning and Mosaiq record-and-verify, 2D/3D conformal, SRT, SBRT and IMRT/VMAT, a Siemens CT simulator, Delta4-class IMRT QA, and an ultrasound-guided HDR/LDR prostate brachytherapy program. The service is accredited and practices to ACR, ASTRO and AAPM standards, with resident teaching on site. Two physicists cover the service, so the work is shared and the pace is clinical rather than frantic.

Responsibilities

• Serve as lead physicist for the radiation oncology service, setting physics priorities and coverage alongside the service chief
• Own the facility Quality Management Program and Radiation Safety Program policies, surveys, shielding review, incident review and regulatory readiness
• Direct commissioning and acceptance testing of linear accelerators, CT simulation, planning and R&V systems, and lead ACR/APEx-level accreditation readiness
• Set and audit the QA program for the Elekta accelerators, IGRT/cone-beam and CT simulator per TG-142, TG-66 and TG-53
• Oversee treatment planning quality in RayStation and Mosaiq, including plan review standards, SRS/SBRT and IMRT/VMAT protocols
• Provide physics leadership for the ultrasound-guided HDR/LDR prostate brachytherapy program
• Mentor the junior physicist, supervise dosimetry practice, and lead resident and therapist physics teaching
• Perform hands-on clinical physics alongside the staff physicist this is a working lead role, not administration only

Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in Medical Physics or Therapeutic Medical Physics
• Board certified in Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology, certification maintained
• Active professional medical physicist license where required by the state of practice
• Prior lead, chief or Radiation Safety Officer responsibility in a therapeutic radiation oncology program
• Depth in commissioning, quality management program ownership and accreditation readiness (ACR/APEx), plus Elekta, RayStation, Mosaiq, SRS/SBRT and HDR brachytherapy experience

Schedule

Full time, Monday through Friday, day tour either 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., aligned to clinic hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No on-call requirement. Occasional after-hours work for accelerator calibration, measurements or QA after machine service, paid at your hourly rate. Federal holidays are observed. Two physicists share the service and cover each other's planned absences.
