Job Details Standard Work Schedule: Mon - Fri (9am - 5pm) Building: Columbia University Medical Center Salary Range: $61,692.40 - $61,692.40 Technical Grade: 5 Job Type: Support Staff - Union Bargaining Unit: SSA Regular/Temporary: Regular Hours Per Week: 35 Position Summary The Research Assistant will be an integral member of the Cardiovascular Surgery Research Team, supporting the processing and storage of biological samples. Under the direct supervision, the Research Assistant will help to facilitate translational cardiovascular research studies. The individual on heart valve physiology, cardiovascular tissue biomechanics, vascular cell physiology, and tissue biochemistry. Will also collaborate with clinical cardiothoracic and animal research teams. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Responsibilities Process and store human biological samples according to established protocol. Accurately record sample information in biobank database. Perform basic and translational research experiments in the area of cardiovascular physiology and material science. Prepare clinical samples (including blood and tissue specimens for histological analysis). Facilitate benchtop research and manage clinical information pertaining to research specimens. Compile and present results in a brief and efficient approach. Assist with the preparation of manuscripts and presentations. Communicate amongst both researchers and clinicians. Species contact non-human rodents, pigs, mice, animal blood & bodily fluids. Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious agents and biological toxins. Support other functions as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and at least one and a half years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience. Preferred Qualifications 1-2 years laboratory experience outside of course work preferred. Strong communication skills preferred. Familiarity and experience with the following laboratory techniques: processing clinical samples, histology, cell culture, immunoassays, biomechanics, imaging, and data analysis preferred. Experience working with patient files, patient demographics, and clinical information preferred. Other Requirements Intermediate to advanced level MS Office skills.
