Lead Medical Support Assistant

Summary The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) at the Oscar G. Johnson VAMC. MSA's at the GS-7 grade performs duties related to scheduling appointments and consults, clinic check-in, eligibility and benefits, answering telephones, beneficiary travel, insurance capture and means testing, data and report preparation, and other clerical duties. Responsibilities VA Careers - Medical Support Assistant: Major Duties include: Monitors and makes work assignments and coordinates coverage at all workstations. Ensuring proper staffing coverage of all areas of responsibility. Conducting ongoing reviews and audits to ensure quality of work. Resolves daily workplace issues. Maintains efficient workflow found in an interdisciplinary unit. Ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments. Providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures, distributing and balancing workload. Orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees. Evaluating training records to ensure all training requirements are met, as well as determining training needs of MSAs and AMSAs to provide support across interdisciplinary settings. Acting as liaison between MSAs/AMSAs and other staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts. Other duties as assigned. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience: None Education: High School Diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education. English Language Proficiency: MSA's must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Grade Determinations: Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-07 Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06) AND Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: KSA-1. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community. KSA-2. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff. KSA-3. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting. KSA-4. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. KSA-5. Ability to provide staff development and training. KSA-6. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics. There may be some walking, standing twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding, or carrying of light items. Some positions may require sitting for long periods of time at a computer terminal typing data while talking on a telephone headset.
