About Boys To Men Mentoring Network of Virginia Boys To Men Mentoring Network of Virginia (BTMVA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young men navigate the critical transition into adulthood. We believe that young men thrive when they are connected to communities of caring mentors who model integrity and emotional intelligence. Our Mission: Through consistent group mentoring, BTMVA creates a safe space where boys learn to speak their truth and grow into accountable young men. Our Vision: We envision a future where boys grow into compassionate, accountable men whose integrity radiates outward, to their families, their communities, and shapes the next generation. Position Overview: The Executive Director (ED) reports directly to the Board of Directors and serves as the most senior staff member of the organization. The ED is responsible for executing the strategic leadership of BTMVA, ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability, program quality, and impact. BTMVA has established a strong record of success, currently operating over 50 mentoring groups in over 40 schools serving over 700 young men, ages 10-17. Our organization thrives thanks to a deeply committed staff and a dedicated 13-member Board of Directors. With powerful outcomes showing that continuing students significantly outperform their peers, we are poised for the next phase of growth. The ED will be tasked with building organizational infrastructure, growing fundraising and public awareness, and ensuring the organization remains a key resource for male mentoring in the Greater Richmond and Tri-Cities area. We are looking for a leader who understands the heart of Boys to Men: consistent group mentoring that gives boys a safe space to be honest and grow into accountable young men. The right person carries the big picture, the funding, the schools, the growth, without losing what makes it work: showing up for our community consistently. They pair vision with the discipline to build systems, strengthen the staff and board, and model the accountability and honesty we ask of our young men. Job Duties Responsibilities The ED Chairs the Management Team and oversees the execution of our core functions across strategic pillars: Strategy, Program Excellence, Team Management, External Affairs & Community Relations, Fiscal Stewardship & Sustainability, and Board Engagement. Strategy Develop the strategic plan with the Board, realize the vision, and define the operations required to deliver it. Set and track milestones so the board can follow progress. Program Excellence Provide strategic oversight of program delivery, ensuring mentoring groups operate with consistency, quality, and fidelity to the BTMVA model. Work closely with the Program Staff to ensure mentoring groups remain a safe, confidential space for emotional growth. Foster strong relationships with school superintendents, administrators, and community leaders to ensure the sustainability and quality of school-based programming. Oversee the development of documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support scalability and efficient operations. Build and maintain a deep understanding of the program by participating in mentoring sessions, overnight retreats, and training and leadership events. The ED does not facilitate mentoring groups, but the presence is what makes it possible to support staff and judge program quality firsthand. Develop tools and methods to monitor effectiveness, efficiencies and report feedback for ongoing program quality improvement. Team Management Hire, supervise, and develop staff, building a culture of trust and accountability. Oversee the recruitment, orientation and training of staff, volunteer mentors and interns. Support staff growth and retention, and lead performance management fairly. Foster a healthy and connected team. External Affairs & Community Relations Serve as a lead public voice for BTMVA with media, community, and partners. Grow the organization’s visibility and reputation across the region. Oversee marketing and communications, including the digital and social media presence. Build and sustain relationships with local government, mental health, and community organizations, and other partners who support the work. Fiscal Stewardship & Sustainability Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Partner with the Board and staff to set grant strategy and oversee the grant process. Collaborate with the Board on development strategies, including annual giving, donor retention, and fundraising activities to move the organization toward a diversified funding model. Work with the treasurer and finance committee on budget planning and financial reporting, and keep the organization operating within its means. Ensure the long-term stability of the organization through conservative, transparent fiscal management working alongside the board. Board Engagement Serves as the primary liaison between the staff and Board of Directors. Attend Board of Directors meetings as an ex-officio (non-voting) member. Partner with the Board to develop organizational policies and ensure governance compliance. Work with the Board leadership to build a Board with the range of skills, perspectives, and community ties the organization needs. Give the board insight into how they can support the fundraising process. Support the Board’s committees with the materials, follow through, and staff capacity that keep their work moving between meetings. Beyond the values we are looking for grounded leadership; a steady, trusted presence who leads by listening and knows when to guide and when to give people room. Preferred Experience A minimum of five years in a senior managerial capacity; preferably at least two years in non-profit management. Experience setting and executing strategic and growth plans. Experience with fundraising and development, including major donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Financial and budget management experience, including overseeing budgets and working with a board on fiscal health. Communications, marketing, or public relations experience; comfortable serving as a public face for the organization. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; must be articulate, compelling, and diplomatic. Proficiency with computers and software applications, including Microsoft (Word & Excel), Google Drive, and Bloomerang. Must pass a Sterling Background check. Must reside within 50 miles of Richmond, Virginia.
