This Phlebotomist role focuses on high-quality blood collection and specimen processing in a fast-paced inpatient and outpatient hospital environment. You perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages, including pediatric and neonatal populations, and handle difficult draws in medical office and clinic settings. You apply a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards, communicate these effectively to colleagues, and support orientation and training for patient service staff. Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques on patients of all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
- Manage difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and busy clinic environments.
- Process specimens accurately and efficiently, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and routing according to laboratory protocols.
- Work in inpatient hospital settings such as pediatrics, ICU, and other high-volume units, maintaining accuracy and composure under pressure.
- Rotate between inpatient and outpatient settings as needed, adapting to different workflows and patient populations.
- Demonstrate and maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations related to phlebotomy and specimen handling.
- Effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to other employees and reinforce adherence to established procedures.
- Support orientation and training for patient service staff, sharing best practices in blood collection, specimen processing, and patient care.
- Respond to same-day call-outs and on-call requests, providing coverage across designated clinics and hospital locations.
- Work flexible schedules, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, weekends, and holidays, in alignment with operational needs.
- Complete a structured training program and apply learned procedures consistently once scheduled for regular hours.
- Collaborate with supervisors and schedulers to pick up available shifts, including split shifts when needed.
- Maintain professional appearance in accordance with dress code requirements and represent the laboratory and clinic with a patient-focused, courteous demeanor.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current CPT I License.
- At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting, including exposure to pediatrics, ICU, and high-volume inpatient units.
- Experience with venipuncture and capillary blood collection techniques across diverse age groups.
- Ability to perform pediatric and neonatal blood collections safely and accurately.
- Proficiency in specimen processing, including labeling, handling, and routing in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Strong understanding of compliance and safety requirements in phlebotomy and laboratory environments.
- Ability to clearly communicate compliance and safety expectations to colleagues.
- Willingness to rotate into inpatient settings, including high-volume environments.
- Flexibility to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts as needed.
- Willingness to work weekends and holidays.
- Comfort with on-call work and responding to same-day calls for shift coverage.
- Ability to interview onsite at the Riverside location.
- Reliability in maintaining a minimum of 30 hours per week after completion of training.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Outpatient phlebotomy experience, especially in high-volume clinic settings, is welcomed and valued.
- 3 or more years of high-volume phlebotomy experience is advantageous for rotating inpatient assignments.
- Experience working as a Phlebotomist, Lab Assistant, or in similar roles involving specimen collection and processing.
- Ability to adapt to changing schedules, including split shifts and occasional shift cancellations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-centered approach to care in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
- Capacity to work across multiple locations to increase hours, including float assignments and coverage at additional medical office buildings.
- Comfort with unionized environments and understanding that available shifts may be influenced by existing staff bidding and scheduling practices.
- Self-motivation to take advantage of professional development resources such as online learning platforms and benefit programs offered by the organization.
Work Environment
The role is based in a large healthcare system with both inpatient hospital units and outpatient clinics in the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas. You primarily work in outpatient clinic locations in Palm Desert, Palm Springs, and Indio, with opportunities to cover additional busy medical office buildings and service areas, including Riverside and Moreno Valley. The environment is high-volume and fast-paced, with frequent same-day call-outs that create opportunities to pick up extra shifts. You complete an initial training period of approximately 2–3 months, starting on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, at the Riverside location, followed by additional training time in Palm Springs. After training, you are scheduled for full-time hours with a minimum of 30 hours per week, though schedules may include split shifts or occasional cancellations up to two hours before the start of a shift. Shifts span 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and you are expected to be open to working weekends and holidays; efforts are made to rotate weekends and provide every other weekend off from on-call when possible. Due to union agreements, contingent workers often cover shifts created by same-day call-outs, and you coordinate with supervisors and schedulers to secure these hours. Dress code requires scrubs, and you work in clinical settings that prioritize patient safety, regulatory compliance, and professional conduct. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $25.00/hr.
