This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) - Office of Mental Health, C. M. Tucker, Roddey Pavilion, 2200 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29203.

As the Registered Nurse, Institutional working under general supervision, assist in planning for providing nursing care in a designated unit or area with the responsibility for assessment of nursing needs, and delegation of assignment for nursing personnel. Cross train and float to other units as needed. This position requires the ability to work with all genders in skilled nursing facility.

Responsibilities for this Registered Nurse, Institutional include but are not limited to:

• Identify symptoms of physical and emotional illness of residents by performing assessments, participating in care conferences, and initiating and maintaining nursing care plans.
• Participate in the administration and documentation of medications and treatments to residents. Assists physicians, executes doctor's orders and maintains other nursing records and reports.
• Observe condition of residents by making frequent nursing rounds, supervising and evaluating nursing care and maintaining safe, therapeutic environment for residents.
• Conduct and participate in training programs. Participate in orientation and on unit teaching of new employees.
• Know the philosophy, mission, policies and standards of the facility and nursing service and through its implementations, set standards of quality nursing.
• Plan, coordinates and evaluates the performance of nursing personnel under supervision.
• Charge Nurse for shift; may assume role of Nurse Manager II in his/her absence.
• Prepare time schedules and assign nursing care of residents and personnel according to their skill and preparation.
• Coordinate activities with other disciplines and promotes good interpersonal relationships through effective communication.
• Serve on nursing committees and participate in nursing service programs.

Additional requirements:

• Ability to lift up to thirty (30) pounds routinely, with the ability to lift fifty (50) pounds or more in an emergency.
• Ability to stand, walk, reach, pull, push, stoop, bend, and climb at least two or three flights of stairs.
• Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in patient areas for long periods.
• Must have manual dexterity.
• Must be able to work with repetitive unusual patient behaviors.
• Must be able to perform MAPS and emergency measures to victims with cardiac and/or respiratory arrest and other emergencies.
• Demonstrate safe and effective use of resident care equipment.

Minimum and additional requirements:

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
• Licensed as a registered nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina.

Preferred qualifications:

• Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Post hire, employee must:

• May function as Charge Nurse.
• Must know the techniques and practices of the nursing profession medical and nursing terminology, administrative methods, and procedures.
• Possess the ability to adhere to standing orders, policies, and procedures; plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans; establish and maintain the confidence and cooperation on patients; interact with patients in a culturally competent, professional manner; prepare educational and training materials for nursing care programs, communicate effectively both orally and in writing; appropriately responds to emergencies, function as a team member, instruct, supervise, and direct paraprofessional staff. May require basic life skills including CPR, AED use and ventilations.
