Assignment: This part‑time position is an Associate Instructor in the School of Continuing Education at West Valley College. The role teaches fitness and balance improvement to older adults ages 55 and older during Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters. The position is represented by the West Valley‑Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554). Work location(s): Campbell Community Center, Campbell, CA Campbell Adult Community Education, San Jose, CA Other sites serving noncredit students in Santa Clara County Salary and Benefits Salary is based on a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full‑time load. It is prorated based on an initial hiring salary range of $38,464 – $55,582 per semester and is based on academic achievement, teaching, and related experience. Minimum Qualifications Education: Possess any one of the following: Bachelor’s degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught; AND either: Thirty hours or two semester units of coursework in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education or approved by the district. This requirement may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR One year of professional experience working with older adults. Associate degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught; AND two years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught; AND sixty hours or four semester units of coursework in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education or approved by the district. This last requirement may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor. Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff. Desired Qualifications Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching in the subject area of expertise, preferably adult populations. Duties and Responsibilities Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in‑class or online/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students, and maintenance of currency in the subjects taught. Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college. Submit attendance rosters and grade reports when due. Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices. Maintain office hours each week, at 0.5 hours per week per section. Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the district and college. Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook. Refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services. Assist students by advising on requirements for successful achievement in their area of study. Work cooperatively within the college community. Foster an environment that protects academic freedom and promotes a positive working environment free from harassment, prejudice, and bias. Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual. Selection Process Applications will be screened by appropriate department representatives on an as‑needed basis.
