VP Chief Nursing Officer Virginia Mason Franciscan Health – Seattle, WA. Job Summary and Responsibilities This position oversees nursing quality and standards in all nursing areas at the assigned facility. As part of the local executive team and the VMFH Nursing Leadership Team, the incumbent defines, plans, implements, and advances nursing practice through innovation and research to improve patient care, patient experience, and quality outcomes. Key Responsibilities Facilitate execution of clinical transformation and enhance patient care services. Improve clinical quality and safety. Develop nursing leadership. Maximize effective resource utilization. Partner with academic organizations to support recruitment, retention, and succession planning. Supervise subordinate management staff. Work effectively in matrixed relationships, influencing and negotiating with high‑level stakeholders, and build support for innovative initiatives, projects, and services. Apply expertise in healthcare administration, patient delivery systems, and continuum of care integration, coupled with strategic business planning, process improvement, change management, budget administration, and personnel management. Essential Job Functions Advance the professional practice of nursing by basing care delivery on industry standards such as the American Nurses Association and CALNOC Quality Indicators. Establish strategic direction and priorities for patient care, including developing and evaluating hospital, ambulatory, and skilled nursing models. Provide direction with VMFH divisional services (e.g., Employee Health, Emergency Management, Compliance, Patient Experience) to promote collaboration. Define standards of care promoting multidisciplinary approach and aligning with the organization’s mission and values. Continuously improve patient services through innovation, developmental opportunities, and coordination across departments, using benchmarking, market and competitor analysis. Lead performance improvement initiatives and monitor nursing‑sensitive quality and safety indicators. Plan, direct, and evaluate programs, systems, operations, and resources of the site‑based clinical nursing functions to ensure safe, appropriate delivery of care and compliance with regulations. Direct and oversee assigned management staff, making employment decisions, setting performance standards, and managing staffing, scheduling, and nursing budgets. Manage resources for recruitment, orientation, education, certification, communication, and retention of nursing staff and aim for low employee turnover. Collaborate with Division CNO and other campus CNOs to standardize approaches aligned with regulatory goals. Take an active leadership role with governing bodies, senior leadership, medical staff, and other clinical leaders in hospital decision‑making. Promote VMFH locally and nationally with professional nursing organizations, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders. Influence public agenda through board participation, professional societies, teaching opportunities, and peer‑reviewed publications. Maintain relationships with key public agencies, accreditation agencies, and regulatory bodies to engage VMFH in national quality discussions and research. Utilize information technology to achieve business objectives and develop strategic plans. Job Requirements Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited school. 7 to 10 years of nursing leadership experience in a large, complex healthcare setting. Experience in Magnet organizations is strongly preferred.
