Mechanical EngineerD-Wave is seeking a mechanical engineer to join our New Haven engineering team and contribute to the design and development of advanced hardware for state-of-the-art quantum computing systems. In this role, you will work hands-on with complex cryogenic, vacuum, and electromechanical systems, helping transform ambitious engineering concepts into reliable, buildable hardware. You will collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and experimentation in a lab environment where mechanical design plays a critical role in advancing quantum technology.What you'll doDesign, prototype, test, and improve mechanical components and system subassemblies for complex electromechanical systemsDevelop and maintain CAD models, detailed drawings, bills of materials, and supporting documentation for prototype builds, design reviews, and released designsApply mechanical engineering principles, including tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA)Evaluate thermal design constraints for mechanical and electromechanical hardware, including CTE mismatch, bolted-joint behavior, heat-transfer paths, electronics enclosure cooling, and cryogenic component thermalization, using hand calculations, test data, FEA/CFD, and other simulation tools as neededSupport hands-on assembly, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of prototype and system hardware; document test results, assembly methods, design changes, and lessons learnedCollaborate with internal teams and suppliers to develop reliable, practical mechanical solutions and resolve fabrication, fit, assembly, and performance issuesAbout YouBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent training and experience3+ years of professional experience in mechanical design or mechanical engineering, with demonstrated ability to independently drive assigned design tasks from concept through build, test, documentation, and releaseSolid modeling experience in a professional CAD systemExperience creating and interpreting detailed mechanical drawings, including tolerances, fits, and GD&TProficiency designing machined and sheet-metal componentsDemonstrated hands-on mechanical aptitude through lab work, fabrication, equipment maintenance, machining, or similar practical experienceAbility to perform first-order engineering analyses and clearly communicate assumptions, results, and design tradeoffsStrong engineering judgment, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skillsA D-Waver's DNAWe look at the future and say "why not"; we see possibilities where others see problems or routines.
