Exercise Physiologist - ACSM (Cardiac ICU)

Job Summary The Senior Exercise Physiologist will perform patient intake, develop exercise prescriptions, monitor physiological data during exercise, and adjust interventions to ensure patient safety and therapeutic benefit. The role requires collaboration with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and other disciplines, and includes mentoring and leadership responsibilities. Location: Vanderbilt University Medical Center – Nashville, TN Schedule: Monday‑Friday | 7:00 AM‑3:30 PM | No weekends or holidays Responsibilities Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized exercise prescriptions for critically ill cardiac patients. Deliver early‑mobility and therapeutic exercise interventions, including bedside exercise and cycling, for ICU patients. Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, and continuous EKG telemetry during exercise sessions. Recognize abnormal physiological responses, contraindications, and signs of clinical instability, modifying interventions as needed. Educate patients and families regarding exercise, recovery progression, and long‑term cardiovascular wellness. Coordinate referrals to outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Collaborate daily with physicians, advanced practice providers, ICU nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals. Document patient care accurately in the electronic medical record. Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, quality‑improvement initiatives, and program development activities. Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for Exercise Physiologists, students, and other team members. Provide exercise and basic health interventions, recognize contraindications, and respond appropriately to all situations. Qualifications ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM‑CEP). Minimum of three years of clinical exercise physiology experience. Demonstrated experience in cardiac rehabilitation and cardiovascular patient care. Strong clinical judgment and ability to work effectively in an acute or critical‑care environment. Experience in a Cardiac ICU, CVICU, or hospital‑based rehabilitation setting (preferred). Experience with advanced heart failure, ECMO, VAD, or transplant populations (preferred). BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers (preferred).
