Job Description The Department of Pathology at UCSF strives to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research, and education. The department provides diagnostic pathology services across a wide variety of subspecialties performed by nationally recognized subspecialists. It supports a diverse range of research programs and offers an academically rigorous residency and fellowship curriculum in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology, and surgical pathology. Job Summary Under the general direction of laboratory management, the incumbent performs all laboratory and administrative duties in preparing tissue specimens for examination by a pathologist. Responsibilities include fixing, embedding, cutting skin tissue, applying a wide variety of immunohistochemical and special stains, preparing solutions, maintaining laboratory equipment, keeping detailed records, and performing quality control procedures. The role supports JCAHO accreditation activities, maintains reagent and control material logs, and assists other histotechnicians as needed. Grossing duties and associated data entry may also be required in this fast‑paced, high‑volume laboratory. Responsibilities Perform routine histology: embedding, microtomy, and staining (both FFPE and Frozen). Apply a variety of staining techniques, including immunoperoxidase histochemical staining, in situ hybridization, and direct immunofluorescence. Ensure accuracy in slide labeling, specimen identification, and documentation. Recognize and resolve routine staining problems, applying sound judgment during routine staining and developmental steps. Use sound judgment to determine specimen suitability for diagnostic purposes and verify correct labeling. Store and dispose of specimens following established hazardous waste protocols; disinfect work area and maintain lab cleanliness. Support TJC accreditation activities, including updating lab manuals and routine maintenance logs. Perform quality assurance checks on slides for patient identification and stain quality; evaluate results and document actions to resolve technical and equipment issues. Perform basic laboratory tasks such as putting away supplies, maintaining and cleaning equipment, preparing solutions, and disposing of chemical waste. Assist other histotechnicians with technical questions, perform daily tasks, and may be asked to perform grossing duties and associated data entry including gross descriptions and accessioning. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications: BS in Science or meets CLIA requirements for high‑complexity testing. Minimum 3‑year experience in a high‑volume histology laboratory. Knowledge of staining techniques and familiarity with reagents. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Required Licenses and Certifications: ASCP Certified HT/HTL, active and current. Preferred Qualifications: ASCP QIHC Certified, active and current. Experience with tissue grossing and processing.
