Lead Protection and Control Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Protection and Control Engineer based in the United States. This is a fully remote engineering opportunity focused on delivering advanced protection and control solutions across transmission, distribution, generation, and industrial power systems. You’ll design, analyze, program, test, and commission protection and control applications for complex power system and substation automation projects. The role combines detailed engineering studies with hands-on testing, customer engagement, and field implementation. You’ll work with utility and industrial customers to develop reliable solutions while contributing to microgrid projects and power system optimization. The position also offers opportunities to improve engineering workflows through automation, software tools, and advanced simulation capabilities. You’ll collaborate with project managers, technical teams, and customers on complex technical requirements and project execution. This role is well suited to an experienced power systems engineer who brings strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and a customer-focused approach. Accountabilities: - Design and deliver complex protection and control solutions for generation, transmission, distribution, utility, and industrial applications. - Support the design and development of microgrid solutions, including power-flow optimization and dispatching algorithms. - Perform engineering studies and power system analyses, including short-circuit, load-flow, ground-grid, lightning protection, insulation coordination, arc-flash, and protective-device coordination studies. - Develop relay setting files covering protection and control elements, control logic, and communication settings for GE and third-party protective relays. - Design, test, and validate customized protection and control solutions both in-house and at customer facilities. - Model and simulate power systems using RTDS or equivalent real-time simulation platforms.

- Develop factory acceptance test plans and conduct testing to validate protection designs for customer review and approval. - Plan and support site acceptance testing and field commissioning of new protection and control applications. - Contribute to the development of software tools that automate engineering processes for internal teams and utility partners. - Participate in project meetings with project managers and customers, providing technical expertise and addressing engineering requirements. - Support technical proposals by identifying opportunities, developing statements of work, and estimating engineering effort for projects and customer engagements. - Prepare technical documentation, reports, presentations, and engineering deliverables to a high professional standard. - Maintain strong relationships with customers and project stakeholders while representing the organization professionally. - Apply for permits and represent the organization as required to deliver engineering services. Requirements: - Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline with a specialization in power systems. - 7+ years of experience designing, studying, and analyzing electric power systems. - Strong understanding of power system steady-state and transient analysis, fault studies, protection theory, and symmetrical components. - Hands-on experience with power system study and engineering tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, SKM, CDEGS, WinIGS, or ETAP. - Knowledge of substation communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP, and Modbus is preferred. - Experience with system commissioning and testing, including Doble, Omicron, or comparable test equipment, is preferred.
