Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Responsibilities VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Interpret requests or instructions from the radiologist or clinicians. Perform a spectrum of simple and advanced MRI exams following prescribed protocols required to perform procedures of the: Brain, Abdominal, Cardiac, MSK, Breast, Extremity, Urological, interventional planning and procedures with and without the use of contrast materials as directed by the radiologist. Operate all MRI equipment; a variety of super conductive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners, highly complex computerized imaging device which employs the use of strong magnetic fields and radio waves to acquire images. Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events. Reconcile patient's current medications then prepares and administers contrast material, under the direction of the radiologist; according to protocols, assuring that current lab results and patient allergies have been checked. Positively identify each patient by asking for two (2) forms of identification not limited to, full name, full social security number, or date of birth. Assist in the transporting of patients, via wheelchair, stretcher, or with walking assistance when appropriate, to different locations throughout the hospital and medical centers. Maximize patient throughput by contacts with escort, ward secretaries, EMS, nursing personnel, etc. Perform adequate MRI safety screening, explain the exam procedure, and choose the best imaging coil for the part of the patient's body being scanned. Prepare the sterile procedure tray, sterile supplies, power injector, pressure bags, and all necessary ancillary equipment. Will prepare patient for procedure by performing sterile prep, IV access as needed, following NFSG venipuncture guidelines. Report all equipment failures in a timely manner. Utilize Vista and CPRS software to look up pertinent patient information that relates to patient examinations; including laboratory reports, nursing notes, radiology orders/consults, physician notes, allergies, and radiology reports. Clean and disinfect equipment after each use in accordance with infection control and EMS standards and demonstrate competency in the ability to set up, clean or reprocess Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as related to the manufacture guidelines. Examine catheters and guide wires for expiration or any type of factory defect, i.e. damaged tips, bends, etc. before used in an examination. Work Schedule: 1pm - 9:30pm, Monday through Friday. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.) Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) REQUIRED, or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that you can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date (12/13/19) of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9: Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Assessments. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Assignment. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. There is some bending, lifting, and carrying of light items such as coils. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.
