Phlebotomist

The Division of Clinical Research provides infrastructure support for all aspects of clinical research.


The primary purpose of the Phlebotomist position is to collect time sensitive research specimens, including but not limited to blood and urine, within the CTRC Laboratory. Also, performs laboratory assignments in the CTRC, and other MDACC designated inpatient and outpatient hospital units, clinics or satellite collection sites.

The ideal Phlebotomist candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, research participants, and team members in a professional laboratory environment. Experience working in a laboratory setting is preferred. Prior experience with specimen processing and performing EKGs is highly desirable; however, candidates who demonstrate the aptitude and willingness to learn these skills are encouraged to apply.

Minimum $18.27 - Midpoint $22.84 - Maximum $27.40
The typical work schedule is 1:00pm-9:30pm (evening shift), Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities
Phlebotomy & Processing
• Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, central venous catheter blood collection, and specialized collections such as hair follicle and body fluids
• Collect time-sensitive research specimens, including blood and urine, within CTRC laboratory and clinical units
• Process, label, document, and transport specimens according to research protocols and laboratory standards
• Accurately enter collection data into logs, requisitions, and electronic systems for research and billing
• Maintain knowledge of specimen handling, storage, shipping, and protocol-specific requirements
• Complete assignments independently while supporting team problem-solving initiatives
• Participate in continuing education to maintain competency and stay current with industry standards

Quality Assurance
• Verify specimen accuracy, completeness, and documentation prior to storage or disposal
• Follow laboratory manuals to ensure correct patient identification and specimen integrity
• Document protocol requirements, deviations, and task completion accurately and honestly
• Complete and maintain electronic and paper records in compliance with regulatory standards
• Request assistance when workload impacts quality and support colleagues as needed
• Adhere to JCAHO standards and regulatory requirements for patient safety and specimen handling

Safety & Customer Service
• Follow all safety policies and maintain safe environments for patients, staff, and visitors
• Properly use personal protective equipment and adhere to safety training requirements
• Handle cytotoxic agents and biological hazards according to institutional guidelines
• Provide professional, tactful customer service and resolve issues with internal and external stakeholders
• Maintain accurate documentation aligned with patient communications and protocol requirements
• Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration in supporting clinical trial activities

Other Duties
• Respond to emails, calls, and pages outside of scheduled hours as needed
• Attend required meetings and fulfill responsibilities beyond the standard schedule
• Adapt to flexible scheduling demands based on operational needs
• Anticipate workflow needs and proactively assist with tasks or escalate issues appropriately

EDUCATION
• Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Preferred: An Associate's Degree Medical Laboratory Technician Program or a Completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program

WORK EXPERIENCE
• Required: Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or a Six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory or With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required
• Preferred: Experience in working in a laboratory setting. Prior experience in specimen processing and EKGs is a plus.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
• Preferred: A CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA) Upon Hire and a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire
